Credits vs Hours
I know you need a certain amount of hours for your certification within a certain number of years.
SO what are credits for? Salary advancement?
We were told we could take Mestract or KDS classes. If it is listed as a 3 credit course would that go towards my 15 credits needed for salary step advancement?

Re: Credits vs Hours
Credits are for salary advancements. You get a raise for every 15 credits you take. My district pays almost $2000 for each block of 15.

Re: Credits vs Hours
I cant address the credits/hours needed for certification now, but for salary movement, you can take credits to apply toward a move. It depends on the contract..ours has jumps of ten or fifteen. Also, we need to get pre-approval.

Re: Credits vs Hours
if it's for your certification, it's not necessarily for salary advancement. salary advancement only happens through approved inservice and/or graduate courses. other courses probably won't count for salary, but can satisfy whatever certification needs you have.

Re: Credits vs Hours
Credits are for salary advancement which usually also serve as professional development or another masters degree. You must take classes, courses and usually get pre-approval for them. My district grants advancements for Masters +10, then +30, then +40, then +60. Credits are OPTIONAL. Most people do them to earn more as well as for development and enrichment.
HOURS are to keep your certification valid... i don't know too much about this since this is under the NEW (post 2004 guidelines). things such as superintendent conference days, faculty meetings, other development mandated by your district would apply to this. your district should be helping you keep track. Also, your district may require a certain amount of hours of development...check your contract. Hours are mandatory.
