% of free lunch - does a higher % correlate with a less desirable school district?
Can anyone tell me, in their experience, do you find a certain amount of free lunch population correlates with a less desirable sd/ area to send your kids to, work in, etc?
IYO, what is a high % of free lunch (looking at stat such as on greatschools.net)?
Truly looking for your thoughts from either home life or work related.

I don't know what a high percentage would be. I work in a school that's 90% free lunch, so many people would probably say it's "undesireable". But there are some excellent, well-run schools in areas with high percentages of free lunch kids. I'd be curious to know the crime rate in areas with high free lunch percentages- that would also give you an idea of whether or not you wanted to live in a certain area.

I would venture to say that the crime rate is higher in areas with a higher %age of free lunch students.

I think that is a bit of a generalization.
There are many reason why children receive free lunch. I wouldn't assume that the area has a crime rate.

i agree. my district is one of the best on LI and we have a lot of kids with free or reduced lunch.
and i don't believe the statistics---i worked in a different district a few years ago and it said something like 3% got free lunch...i KNEW it was more like 60% and still cannot figure out how they got their statistic.
there is much more to a school district than how many kids get free lunch

I totally agree. My district probably has at least 40% of the student receiving free lunch. But I could be a little off. Regardless, I had a student the other day give me a form about free lunch and I never would have imagined she received free lunch. There is so much more to the free lunch program that what one may think.

well... none of my students pay for breakfast or lunch- it is all free- fortunately my school is one of the Better of the district, however, it is not a good district in CT as a whole.
