What should I use to sketch an outline on DD's wall?

What should I use to sketch an outline on DD's wall?
I want to try and paint a ribbon border in DD's room (PBK has a decal but I want to see if I can paint it) but not sure what I should use to sketch it out. I certainly can't just go and use paint even though it is suppose to be freehand. I was thinking of chalk.

If you have a laser level you can put that up so you have a straight loine and use that to guide you freehand. You could also use chalk

Those are some great ideas, thanks! My only teacher friend is in Medford and I am in NJ. I have to check out that art website. PBK has the decal of what I want to paint and it would around $150 to do the decal for her entire room but me painting is so much more economical especially since I already have brown paint from our bedroom.
