Do you feel like lotion does more damage than good?
I'm talking about hand lotion. I am a hand/body lotion freak!! I literally lather in it when I get out of the shower. I use hand cream like it's going out of style... But lately I feel like when I wash my hands (which I do about 25 times a day), if I don't immediately put lotion on, my hands are so dry!! Do you think it's a result of using so much lotion?

no, definitely not more damaging. it's the hand washing that is drying your skin out. although lotion is a temporary fix, it still works.

I've always washed my hands this much.
I used to use carmex lip stuff, in the blue little jar. My lips started getting more and more chapped. My dermatologist told me it was the carmex. That is was actually drying out my lips... I thought maybe the lotion was having the same effect...

washing your hands 25x a day is drying out your skin, not the lotion - and if you use a hand sanitizer, like purell, that will make it even worse. Do you work in healthcare? Why are you washing so much?

It's the hand washing and the change in weather that is drying out your hands...not the lotion.

ok, i exaggerated..lol it's not 25 times a day.. but it's A LOT! I shower in the morning, do my stuff, wash them before I leave the house. Wash them when i get to work, wash them 4 times through out the day after I go to the bathroom, wash them before lunch, wash them when i get home, and then after every time I go to the bathroom at home... so maybe 14 times a day? But I've always washed them this much.. it's just recently that I've noticed my hands feeling extra dry.
I don't work in health care, I'm just a germ freak. I work in the city and everything grosses me out....

this is exactly me, i wash soooo many times. i wash after using the restroom, before eating, after touching keys, money, dog food, etc.
i don't think it's the lotion though - maybe try a moisturizing hand soap?

I do feel some brands of lotion can actually be more drying. I used Johnson & Johnson on DD and it seemed to dry her skin out more. Now we use Savon and only when she needs it.
I wash my hands a lot too but I don't need hand lotion in the summer. I do need it in the winter because of the dry air. I love L'Occitane Hand Cream.

I hate the feeling of washing my hands and not putting cream on. They feel so dry. I carry cream with me so when I have to wash my hands I have it. I keep cream by my kitchen sink and everytime I wash my hands I put lotion on.

same here!
my hands KILL me if i dont put lotion on right after. I was just thinking about this the other day, and reading the back of the aveeno bottle to see what ingredients were in it that might be drying... but, my findings have been inconclusive thus far

I am addicted to lotion also and have noticed the same thing for years. I've been trying to cut back though because its grossing me out the thought of all that lotion going into my body.
Someone did tell me that yes it is more drying because your skin gets used to not have to naturally moisturize itself.
Same with lip blam...

depends on the lotion. I use cocoa butter on my hands when I wash them (I also wash then 87687876 times a day) and they stay hydrated. Some lotions I feel just suck and don't work, like scented lotions, etc.

Hmm, so mixed reviews...
I use Curel in the morning, and L'Occitane through-out the day. Sometimes Kheils or Burt's Bee's as well...
I shoud start buying the cheap stuff and see if that's any better..

You should try this stuff Avon makes called Silicon Glove-It works great for dry skin and is not greasy

I heard that chapstick can dry out your lips but I never heard that w/ lotion. I wash my hands 25x's a day and just by that my hands are so dry and aligatorish! I think it may be the hand-soap. Reminds me I need to go wash my hand and lotion up

my doc says that yes lotion is more drying. he said that the only thing that is really good for moisturizing is baby oil.
