What's a good way to make waves/loose curls in straight hair?

My hair stylist always does it using a curling iron ut it never comes out right when I try it. Should I try rollers? I am looking to do loose curls/waves.

I just had a hair curling break through with steam rollers!

That was the only thing that would work for me, but it still didn't look right, so last week, I put my hair in a low pony tail & divided it in to sections & just curled those tail section , and then curled the side bangs/long layers that feel out of the ponytail.

Then I removed the pontail & shook it out. It looked much better than when I curled my whole head & ended up with the bad perm look!

Also, sometimes it's how you hold the curling iron. Verticle vs. horizontal.
