Planes and Dogs

So we just got back from our cruise and the DH has got the snorkeling bug....loves it and is wanting to plan a trip back to fla.

We are lucky because my mom has a condo there so less expense for us. AND a place to bring Martin if we want.

So i am wondering has anyone brought their dogs or cats on planes?
How does this work?
Where do they go for the ride?

my sister brings her cat all the time, and she puts him in those carrying cases for cats.
He goes under her seat. I thought airlines were NOT allowed to put animals in cargo in the hotter months.
