Carribbean vacation

I have never been to any island. Where should we go? Where should we stay?

We are on a tight budget and I do not like traveling (ie long plane rides, scary car rides in taxis as I have heard about esp in Jamaica Chat Icon )

Thanks everyone!Chat Icon

Re: Carribbean vacation

If you're on a tight budget and you want a short flight, I would look into the Dominican Republic. We went a few years ago and it was great and pretty inexpensive, plus the flight is direct from JFK and only about 2 1/2 hours.

Re: Carribbean vacation

If budget is a concern I would take Aruba, St. Lucia and Puerto Rico out right away. You can do Bahamas, Jamaica or DR on a fairly tight budget and have a great time, with beautiful beaches. If you look inot DR, make sure to book Punta Cana, Puerto Plata is on the Atlantic Ocean, not the carribean.

Re: Carribbean vacation

We went to St. Lucia in February and while it was incredible it's not the kind of place where you can go if you are on a budget. You can probably get a great deal to Jamaica of even the Bahamas. Hope you have a great time wherever you decide!

For a budget-friendly trip, I would look into doing Breezes Runaway Bay in Jamaica. It's inexpensive and way nicer than the Breezes in Nassau. Just keep your eyes closed in the taxi, it's not that long of a ride.

ITA.. Dominican Republic is CHEAP, gorgeous and a quick flight. The all-inclusives there are GREAT!

Re: Carribbean vacation

You might want to look into a cruise, they are relatively cheap compared to resort vacations and you can visit a couple of islands

Re: Carribbean vacation

We just priced some vacations and the DR was cheapest, but we are returning to Jamaica. We're paying $1500 for both of us for 6 nights all inclusive at Couples Swept Away ($2400 incl. airfare)--I LOVE this resort chain! We are returning for our third time. It includes all activities and excursions too, so it's a great deal I think. The driving is not bad--we get a shuttle from the resort that brings us from and to the airport, and the drivers are always careful. The streets are narrow, but I don't find it to be any more stressful than driving in Manhattan.

Do you have an exact budget? Aruba, St. Lucia, and the Bahamas are probably the most pricey options listed.

I agree. We were probably only going for 4-5 days which may have made them affordable.

Isn't the food in the DR disgusting though? That's what I have heard and food is VERY important to me Chat Icon

It really depends where you stay. You'll have to do your research- tripadvisor is a really great place to start. Just realize that you are going to see both good and bad, some people are impossible to please, so try to take it all with a grain of salt. Most all-inclusives don't have "amazing" food, but if you do one of the other islamds you mentioned, dining on your won coupld be very pricey.
