Re: Why is the pay on LI so low
I agree. That's one of the reasons I went back to NYC. I lucked out with my job. I have a ton of flexibility and the pay is very good.
You may want to consider it for the right spot. There are plenty of 9-5s out there in NYC that pay well with good benefits and paid time off packages.

Re: Why is the pay on LI so low
This is the reason why i work in NYC I dont know what we are going to do when we start a family.... I wish it was better so expensive to live on Long Island but the pay is not enough to survive...

My situation exactly - worked in NYC 10 years and when I had a child I realized that day care would never work. I have been looking on Long Island for months and haven't been able to find anything that pays more than HALF of a NYC salary!

Because they can. They know that there are soooo many people - like many of us that commute and would rather work in LI. And believe it or not - there are many people willing to take the paycut to stay on the Island.

i didnt say the pay was high, i said it was the same as NYC
my friend who is a nurse has a job in nassau and NYC hospitals didn't pay much more - they paid more but not enough more for the extra commute time/cost

I am also willing to take a pay cut, but 35k a year is insulting (I hope I did not offend anyone)

$35K is good pay for someone right out of college and still living at home. or maybe in an area of the country where the average house doesn't cost $400K++!

Re: Why is the pay on LI so low
I can understand why the pay can be a bit lower on LI opposed to NYC but 35K for an experienced Executive Assistant is bananas!!! I've seen EA positions on Craigs List in NYC for 90K!

ITA! I would never even consider a position that low for my experience level. In fact, I don't know why someone would even consider me for that spot knowing what my salary background is.
I tend to think that some of those low paying positions don't care about turnover or are just looking for someone out of school.

That is how I feel as well, but communting to Manhattan from Suffolk and having a child in daycare is just not a good fit. Plus we all know how reliable the LIRR is

Re: Why is the pay on LI so low
think it depends on the type of job, position. level, etc...I think for some jobs its very comparable but certainly not all

Re: Why is the pay on LI so low
I am a college graduate (BA from Fordham) and have over 20 years of experience yup i'm old I was an executive assistant/office manager for a Fortune 500 company for 10 years prior to having ,my daughter. I am willing to take a pay cut but I need at least 45-50 to cover daycare expenses and have some left for bills and what not. Just sooo frustrating
I need to hit LOTTO

Re: Why is the pay on LI so low
Unfortunately, I think it's all an issue of supply and demand. So many people want to work out there the employers don't need to pay the higher NYC salaries. There are always exceptions though, I am pretty sure my firm pays the same for the LI office as the NYC office, it sometimes depends on how big the company is.

Re: Why is the pay on LI so low
I would not take it. You have to deduct 3-5K a year on commute expenses. Not worth it at all!!!!

Re: Why is the pay on LI so low
I already work in a field that doesn't pay a ton but it's pretty sad the amount of pay cut people in my field take to work on Long Island.
I actually am going to get trained more in business/management at my current job in Manhattan..........I figure I can always go back to direct social work/case management if I don't like it and maybe it will make me a more marketable employee down the road if I want to get a job on Long Island..........or maybe not......from discussions I've had with friends, LI employers tend to avoid hiring people who've worked in the city their whole professional lives..........
