Question about routines and sleep and night melt downs....
The past two nights have been really rough! Both babies are having a really fantastic day but horrible evenings! The screaming was out of control yesterday! Is 7 weeks too young to try and establish a routine? Please help!

Re: Question about routines and sleep and night melt downs....
Around 7 weeks is when DDs began sleeping through the night...however, it was from about 11-6. We would try and try to put them down around 8 but they would cry and not want to go down until 11. So, you can try to set a routine, but their bedtime may be a bit later than you hope. You'll get there - good luck!

Re: Question about routines and sleep and night melt downs....
People on here will disagree with me, but I don't care because it worked for us and I had two and it's a whole nother ballgame. I started the CIO method around that time and never took one out of the room when he was crying so as to not wake the other one up. Within 2 nights they started going to bed from 11-6.
I would give them their final bottle around 10ish and then put them down about a 1/2 hour afterwards. They usually would cry 15-20 minutes and while it was pure agony for DH and I, it worked. After about a week, the crying stopped. The boys to this day stay asleep even when the other one is crying or screaming.
A lot of people believe you should not use CIO till 6 months, so i feel bad for starting it at 8 weeks but it worked for us and we started it again when we went to 7-7 at 4 months.
Good luck....I remember what those horrible nights were like.

as soon as they came home from hospital they were on a routine. The girls thrive on schedule--just like mom!

Re: Question about routines and sleep and night melt downs....
stacey many hugs for those stressful nights! i didn't believe that it would ever get better, but it does!!
are you still breastfeeding? i don't think at 7 weeks my babies could go that long without nursing. they are still young and need to nurse often. i am not from the school of thought that bfed babies should have to wait to eat, because it's not "time" yet. but i don't think there is anything wrong with starting a routine (a flexible one) while still nursing on demand. we started a routine of putting on pjs, getting into my bed to tandem nurse and while i nurse i sing one lullaby and then dh reads two stories (guess how much i love you and goodnight moon), we would then swaddle them and put them down in the cosleeper. now, we still do the same thing every night without the swaddling and they are in their own cribs in their own room.
good luck!!!

I would agree... never too early. I used to let them sleep whenever was natural for them during the day, but nightime/wakeup was always on a routine. See what works for your individual family.

Re: Question about routines and sleep and night melt downs....
We have a routine for the morning and for "bedtime" but it is the time in the middle that I am having a problem with. The twins are good and only wake up once during the night for a feeding (around 3:30-4) and are going down around 11:00 (that is okay with me) The witching hours are between 7-10. I am still bf and will feed on demand, but that isn't really satisfying them. It is a constant whine fest with some screaming attached. I sing, read, etc...but this week has been hell. I know it will get better, but it sure didn't feel that way last night!

so is your bedtime routine at 11? maybe you can make it earlier, little by little. we use to have witching hours until i made an earlier bedtime. even with an earlier bedtime they may not sleep straight through and you may have to nurse again, but at least they are sleeping in between and not being stimulated and overtired.
i have so many for you, because those hellish weeks are still fresh in my memory.

Re: Question about routines and sleep and night melt downs....
I'm still trying--I couldn't tell you. I had them both nuts at that age too. At 8 months we have them split up--one sleeps upstairs with my dh one downstairs with me and we both give them one bottle if we have to after that no more. It was so bad I was getting up 11 times a night between the two. I suck at schedules. Give me all the secrets when u get them!
