When is it time to give up?
When is it time to give up on IUI's? I know insurance will pay for more...but I don't know when enough is enough. I am having a hard time dealing with this (I did 4). Do I say screw it and move on to IVF, even though I have no insurance for it? They say that it's only a 10-20% chance of success on IUI...what's the % of sucess on the first IVF? Anyone know? Do I continue with my RE, or do I find a new one? I like the RE and the office...but would a fresh set of eyes on my file, be of any help?

Re: When is it time to give up?
I really don't know what to tell you. I know someone who got pregnant on their 6th IUI and another on their 5th. I don't know what the percentages are as far as success but I would think that they would be better then 10-20% since doing in naturally is about 25%. I could be totally off on the numbers. Talk to your current doctor about options. See what they have to say and go from there.

Re: When is it time to give up?
According to the Re at my clinic, they say the more cycles you go the better your odds. In other words they said 4-6 IUIs better your chances. However, it all depends on why you are doing IUIs in the first place. What protocol are you on ? Do you get multiple mature follies at O time ? You may want to change the protocol associated with IUI.
If you need to pay for IVF out of pocket, I would make sure I go to the one with the best success rates. Make sure you are going to a clinic that is associated with a hospital and has state of the art lab equipment. There are a lot of new things out there going on for IVF and some clinics aren't up to date. I also feel going to a clinic that has an andrology dept can be beneficial.
I suggest spending some time on www.ivfconnections.com. It's such a great resource. You can find out who some of the more inventive clinics and doctors are out there. It's not soley for ivf, I think you will find it informative and a good support.
Here is the list of NJ clinics and their 2002 success rates, http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/ART2002/clinlist02.asp?State=Nj

Re: When is it time to give up?
Thanks Michele. I know I should probably stick out the 4-6 IUI's...but they are getting hard to deal with. As for protocol...for the last cycle I did gonal-f and repronex along with the lupron. I had a few mature follies at O time...I think there were 3 or 4. I am only working with 1 tube and 1 ovary. I did different levels of chlomid for the first 3 rounds.
I'll check out the link you posted...thanks.

Do you know why your chances increase the more you do? If all the pieces are in place (egg, sperm, good uterine lining, timing, etc.), then why does it work on the 5th or 6th try, but not the first 4? This is what has me so confused?????

I think its because your body starts responding better to meds. I know a lot of people dont intially respond to things like Clomid and Femara and by say the 3rd month they do...so it takes some time to get your body responding to your protocol.

Re: When is it time to give up?
I did 6 IUI' s and NO LUCK, I moved right into IVF (wish I did it sooner) and got PG first try, unfortunatley it ended in a m/c. I will do a FET, we have 7 eggs that are frozen. If you can afford it I would go on to IVF, your chances are so much better, especially if you are young

It doesn't increase your chance per occurence. However, doing more IUIs just increases your possible chance of it finally working. Flipping a coin is a 50/50 chance....so the more times you flip the coin the more often you have a chance of getting heads. However, we all know that the odds of flipping a coin and getting heads, are a lot higher than getting pregnant.
When you are medicated, with femara/clomid or injectibles...the hope is that there are more eggs. Sort of like more chips to a roulette game. The more chips you have down , the better the chance of one of the numbers coming up.
Honestly, there is no magical number of IUIs or months cycling that will bring a healthy bfp. Dr. San Roman said it's more about nature than anything else. That's one of the reasons I am switching RE's, I am not paying for nature. The immune system can have a lot to do with why we don't always conceive. There are even links between hormone levels and the immune system. There are some really revolutionary doctors out there that are doing incredible things in that area. However, they are few and far between. It's one of the reasons I did the RPL panel. It was literally 14 vials of blood that I had to give.

Re: When is it time to give up?
My friend got IVF because her husband had a vasectomy before they were married and reversal didn't work. She is pregnant now with twins. She had it done at Columbia which is supposed to be very good for IVF and her Dr said the same thing after the implant-this is more art than science now.

Re: When is it time to give up?
I don't have a real good answer for you. I think Michele has said it best. I know for myself, it was time to stop. I had been doing injections for five months with four IUI's and one cancelled cycle. Making follies was not my problem getting pg was . So we decided to call it quits for a while and maybe next year take a second look at what we would like to do, maybe IVF if we have insurance to cover...or maybe adoption. You have to do what is right for you and DH....that's the most important thing.
