Any other faculty doing a pedometer challenge?
We just started this week. Our entire faculty bought pedometers and we're doing a monthly contest to see who can take the most steps. Our PE teacher started this to get the faculty to bond and motivate the kids to be physically fit. The kids are going crazy over it! I was out on the field walking yesterday in the freezing cold and I ended up with a long trail of kids following me because they wanted to know how many steps they took, too Anyway, it's awesome because we keep track online and apparently it's a big thing that a lot of schools do. It's been great so far and has boosted morale and gotten teachers moving around inbetween classes. Oh, and PS, I'm winning so far

Re: Any other faculty doing a pedometer challenge?
I love hearing more schools doing this.
You can play games and have kids guess what activities will produce X# of steps. Then have them do it.
Do scavenger hunts solving problems related to a topic and have them read before and after # of steps.
Have kids set goals.
Have them compare days when weather is poor and how it effects their #, to make them aware of how active they really are.
Are you tracking it with distance? I've seen some schools to a "across america" or olypmic torch route and as the classes pass mile markers they learn something about the country, state, etc. Even the cafeteria gets involved and makes a dish (tacos, spaghetti) depending on the area. Art, history, science, math, etc....Involve everyone.
I can go on all day about this!

Re: Any other faculty doing a pedometer challenge?
We're just doing it as a faculty right now, for ourselves. The kids have totally gotten excited about it, so our PE teacher bought the 8th graders pedometers, and it's just been spiraling from there. we use www.pecentral.com to log our steps everyday. We're looking to get the kids involved, but first we wanted to try it out, thanks for all the ideas!

just because you don't have enough pedometers for all the kids, you can still involve them and maybe have a different student wear the pedometer each day to represent the class.
There are grant programs though NASPE and such that offer pedometers. Your PE department should get that info.
