Well, I'll certainly FM one to anyone who has a question. I write over 40 a year. (I teach two sections of AP English to juniors... it's a nightmare every fall.) But here's my advice about the format:

1st paragraph: Who the kid is and how you know him/her, your initial impression

2nd paragraph: Kid's performance in your class and anything that stands out about it

3rd paragraph: A personal anecdote about the kid as a person. (This is where a questionnaire comes in handy. I won't write a recommendation for a kid who hasn't filled a questionnaire out for me.) This way, if you don't have an anecdote, you know things about the kid from this sheet.

4th paragraph: Conclusion and your official "recommendation."

If you have any more questions, like I said... I've become a reluctant pro at this.

I'm a guidance counselor and write what feels like a million of these a year.

There's nothing more frustrating for a counselor than to have a teacher write a letter that speaks about the student's participation in things outside of their classroom. That is really what the counselor's letter is for. It's a "whole picture".

A teacher's letter should speak to the student's ability and performance in your class. How they may be perceived by their peers (leader in the classroom, role-model, etc) and a personal anecdote is always a lovely touch. If you need any help. just FMChat Icon

ITA!! I am a h.s. counselor also and feel the same way. Often times teachers only write about their outside activities, the colleges want to know about them as a "student", we write about them as a person and how they contribute to the school, etc. A few short lines is ok, but if the whole letter is about outside activities I don't think colleges want to hear that.
