How do raises work?
This is the first time I've ever had a full time office job.
When I was hired I wasn't told anything specific about raises. I know there's a promotion after 9-12 months which comes with a raise. I've been around for 8 months..people who have been here a year have not been promoted yet... but aside from promotions, do people usually get raises at the end of the year? I am not expecting one since I've only been here 8 months and I hopefully have a promotion and raise coming up within a few months, but I was wondering how it's customarily done. My co-workers have all been talking about hoping for the promotion to get a raise, but I'm wondering what's customary when no promotion is involved? When are you informed? etc. etc. I'm just wondering how it's generally done in the workplace since my previous employment was part time or it was contract work based on whatever show I was working on. I am really clueless about normal jobs and office politics
I should probably just ask my boss, but it's kind of awkward "um so by the way..when do I get a raise?"

you start with a lower salary, and then the raise makes it higher

Re: How do raises work?
My company does raises & reviews on or about our anniversary date. The exception would be if there was some sort of huge adjustment in your job description.
I know some companies do reviews one time a year.

Re: How do raises work?
We get raises at the end of our fiscal year (July). Sometimes it comes with a promotion (like every 3-4 years), but more often not.

The companies I've worked at do reviews/raises in December.
Are you close with any of your coworkers, could you ask them how it works where you are?

I'm sorry but that was funny!!
To answer your question...
I would speak to your boss or maybe ask a co-worker what they have done in the past with newer employees.

The problem is we have an entirely new team this year...no one's been here for an enitre year yet. We started in Jan, Feb, March and April, with me starting last..but no one's been around long enough to know.
Anyway it sounds like there's usually one point every year where you are evaluated for a raise and hopefully get one, which is good. I can't live on this salary forever.

I agree--ask a coworker friend how it works where you are. I'm in a union, so we usually get a union-negotiated raise of 3.5 or 4% each year, and every fall we are eligible for a merit increase if your boss feels you are worthy.

Re: How do raises work?
I would ask HR for an employee handbook. Some companies have them depending on their size.
Each company will vary. A lot of them are at either your anniversary date or the end of the year.
At a job I had, it was "supposed" to be at the end of the year, then it took 3 or 4 months for managers to approve, meeting with the manager, blah blah blah.... we did not get our "raises" (if we could call it that!!!) until the end of April.
