Vacation House

Ok - DH and I are just starting to look for our first house (!) so we're in no way even close to this....but I know so many people that forgo vacations and buy one vacation house in another state that they travel to a couple of times a year.

It just go me thinking about it and if I could pick... where would I get a second house for us to use as a little "get away"

About a year ago we stayed at a B&B in Lynn MA so I was thinking maybe there because it's right on the water and only a short train ride away from Boston....

Where would you get a house? (but not like in Europe or the Bahamas... if you stayed in US)

Re: Vacation House

Both DH & my families have their own vacation homes. My families is in Maine & we have had it for over 50 years. DH's family has one in the Pocono Mountains for the past 15 years. It is nice to have someplace to go without the extra expenses.

DH & I have discussed buying one of our own & we are looking in Hilton Head, SC. We go there every year for Thanksgiving week & we rent a condo on the beach! It would be nice to have one of our own so we could go down a couple of times a year. They are quite expensive though (over $600K).

Depending on what you like, I would look at
1) Cape Cod
2) Virginia Beach
3) Outer Banks
4) FL somewhere

Re: Vacation House

We have a house in Mexico and while it's great (don't get me wrong) and I would LOVE to retire there, I feel guilty thinking about going other places since it will just sit there.

We are on the fence about selling it and while it would be so sad - I think about all the vacations we could take with the profits.

Re: Vacation House

I think I'd want a vacation house that I could drive to, that way it would be more easily accessible. Perhaps somewhere in eastern PA.

I feel the same way. If we were able to afford it, we would love a vacation house on the Rhode Islad shore. But realistically, I think a Poconos house would be great. It is easy to get to and it's a year round kind of place. In the winter there's skiing, tubing, snow mobiling, etc... And in the summer we'd buy a house that was in a golf/lake community.

Re: Vacation House

I also like the idea about having a vacation home I could drive to.
Where I don't know. Will look into it.

Re: Vacation House

My in-laws have a condo in Myrtle Beach that DH and I go to at least 4 times a year...we love it there. It is my "peaceful place". We are looking into purchasing one for ourselves in the near future.

Re: Vacation House

Nowhere! I love traveling to different places and wouldn't be happy if we just went to our vacation home—which I imagine we'd have to clean and close-up each time—NO THANK YOU! I remember when I was little and my parents bought their house in Florida, that was the end of going anywhere else (except local spots like Lake George etc.).

If I won the lottery I'd love to buy a tiny little bungalow on the water in Shelter Island.
