Is This Fair?
So my job switched over to a new payroll system. We are going to be out one week's pay. I am not going to receive that one week's pay until I leave the company.
But aren't I going to pay tax on that money that I will never see this year?
I am irritated because I will literally have $50 for gas , food etc this month. Yeah I shouldn't live check to check but I don't know anyone who extra money just laying around.
I just don't see how this is fair?

Re: Is This Fair?
I guess they can do it however they please. A lot of companies hold 1-2 weeks pay when you first start.
When my company switched payroll we went from a Monday-Friday work week to Thursday-Wednesday. Somehow it did work out to where we didn't miss any days.

Yes, while most companies "hold" a week or two, they dont literally HOLD it. Your payroll just starts later. I dont see how you can work a week and NOT get paid for it. I have never heard of something more ridiculous before in my life. If my boss told me that I would be working the first week in January but wouldnt get that money until I left, I'd quit and say fine give me my money

No, you'll pay tax on it when you receive it when you leave the company.
That really stinks and I'm so sorry that it's happening to you. I worked for a company once that held back 2 weeks pay when you started... so I worked almost a month before I got paid. At that time, I WAS living paycheck to paycheck and barely at that. I can't imagine how I'd have felt if they changed that over and just decided to skip a pay week for me after I'd been working there a while.
I'm pretty sure it's within their rights to do so, but man, that's really tough on employees -- especially those who really depend on that paycheck coming regularly. I'm so sorry.

Re: Is This Fair?
my job holds a weeks pay, but from when you started...I've never heard of them doing it midway through someone's employment...that just doesn't seem right.
I wouldn't be able to function without my paycheck...I'm soo sorry they did this to you.

Re: Is This Fair?
Sad part is I love my job. This is the only weird thing that has happened. They are usually very thoughtful of their employees. What if I don't leave for 5 years? I'll get my check 5 years from now?
I don't get it. They told us about a month ago, but still I don't have the luxury to save that kind of money. I bet they thought our bonus would cover it. But that was a bonus, I used it to pay debt and purchase some gifts for the holidays.
I think its to late to go to HR, its already done.

They are not actually holding your paycheck from 1/1/08 until you leave. Instead of getting a check on Friday for the week ending Friday, you get a check for the week ending the friday before.
