Yes, sometimes things just need a quick mix, not the whole set up, clean up process that is required with the mixer.

I do - I don't keep the stand mixer out all the time and often use the hand mixer for potatoes...I use the stand mixer more for baking

No, my kitchenaid mixer lives on the counter, its easy for me to use and and I think its super easy to wash.

yes, I have both. I typically only use the hand mixer for brownies from a box and instant pudding.
my MIL is one of the best cooks/bakers I know and she doesn't own a stand mixer. IMO, it really doesn't matter what you use. it's a personal preference

i have both just because i grew up using a hand mixer and didn't think i would ever use the stand mixer ( DH wanted one)... BUT, once i discovered that you can keep the stand mixer on teh counter all the time, ready to use... i haven't touched the hand mixer LOL i guess its nice to have for certain things, but i think i used it once since we got it....
