Does anyone know how much a Teacher Assistant makes on Long Island?
Do they get benefits? Is is difficult to get a job as a Teachers Assistant?

Thank you!

Re: Teachers Assistant

In my district, TAs make in the mid-high 20Ks.... they get benefits, but you pay into them... i think 20%.

TA jobs are farily easy to get becuse the turnover is high.

Re: Teachers Assistant

Teacher assistant pay at least 14.13 hr nowadays. It could have gone up but my friend is a teacher assistant in Uniondale and she don't get benefits because she is part-time. I think full time teacher assistant do, I am not too sure. You also have to have at least 30-60 college credits. However, if you are thinking about becoming a teacher in the future this is a good opportunity to gain experience and put on your resume.

Thank you for the replies.
I actually am a teacher (5th year) but i teach in a catholic school and want to go to public. I thought maybe being a teachers assistant on Long Island would get my "foot in the door"..i don't know..I'm just trying to think of anything.

Re: Teachers Assistant

Teacher Assistants in my district get paid approx. 30K per year, had benefits, and are eligible for TRS. Teacher Aides are a different story; they are hourly, and I'm not sure about benefits or retirement.

Re: Teachers Assistant

Don't settle for less. If you have 5 years of experience that is great! I know plenty of teachers who now work in public schools and were hired with no problem at all. Long Island schools are tough because I sub, taught and did leave replacements and I was frustrating to have adminstration observering you every second just to get tenture. Personally, I enjoy working in the city because it is a rewarding experience. If you are very serious about working in LI schools as a teacher I will apply for a teacher, not a teacher assistant. Good luck!!

Dont' sell yourself short... with 5 years experience, provided yo uhave your NYS teaching license in the area you teach (I know Catholic schools are little more lenient in some cases) you WILL be fine to apply for a teaching position.

On the plus side though, if you can't find a teaching job, the teaching assistant positions, when i was in one about 8 years ago, i earned MORE (about $3K more) as a teaching assistant (no planning, no report cards, etc. etc.) than i would have made teaching in the Diocese of RVC at that time. So if anything, a TA position would probably be around the same money, gets you in the state pension system and half the work!

Re: Teachers Assistant

NYCgconselor1 and donegal419 thank you for your advice!
I do have my teachers license, I'm even certified in reading. I just get very discouraged because I couldn't find anything last year.
I have a feeling that my job is in danger this year and I will really try anything so I'm not jobless.

Thanks again for the info!

never go "down a step". if you're a teacher now, don't go anything below that. get a job teaching. being a TA after being a teacher will not be looked upon well IMO by administrators. they'll probably wonder why you did that. TA jobs can lead to permanent positions, but not often. you probably have a better chance if you were a permanent sub

best of luck!
