What would make you change districts?
Hiring season is slowly coming upon us. I am so tossed in the air with whether or not I should look for something else.
If you have changed districts for, would you mind sharing why and if you regret your decision?
If you are thinking of it, what made you feel this way?
My main reason is the drive. Yes, I wrote a venting email, but I love my actual job. I have great students and have made such a rapor with other students that I don't have. Besides the petty stuff is it worth leaving and starting over?

Re: What would make you change districts?
i think if it's a LI district, unless the commute was really taking a toll on my quality of life, i would probably stay. LI jobs are hard to find and there are going to be petty, annoying people wherever you go.
i only changed once and that was from the city to LI. I changed for several reasons: mainly the high quality and reputation of my now district. A much shorter commute and a HUGE pay increase also made the decision a no-brainer for me. i dont' regret my decision for a nano-second... i am so happy where i am, short of a major life change such as moving out of state or 5 kids, i plan to never leave. I love where I am.

Id look closer to home then. DH has the same commute and he likes his school (NYC), but the commute kills him and we dont have kids yet!

it can't hurt to look, so I would look. if your commute is an hour now, I can only imagine what is going to happen when bad weather hits.

Re: What would make you change districts?
I recently left a tenure-track position 10 minutes from my house for a non-tenure track position 35 minutes from my house! Why? The new job is a .6 position and allows me to be home more with DS. I have two full days off! Everyone thought I was crazy for doing it, but it was the best decision I have ever made.

Re: What would make you change districts?
If I were you, and I loved my school, district, and students and the only thing I was questioning is the commute, I would not switch jobs. JMO HTH My commute is pretty far too (32 miles) but I love my job and the kids so I wouldn't even think about leaving.

Re: What would make you change districts?
If you're able to, then I'd try.
I left a job I truly loved & felt at home in w/ staff that were friends b/c the commute was about an hour & 10 minutes, more w/ traffic & it was just too much, esp. now w/ baby at home.
I left for a position on LI, still 40 min. away but that much more time w/ baby.
Follow your heart.

Re: What would make you change districts?
I am glad this was brought up. I do not like the district I am in. I really is a poor district in many ways . My compute however is only 15 minutes. I guess I should stay if its a LI district?

Re: What would make you change districts?
i would say first and foremost are you happy at the school you are in? happy in terms of:
students admin location commute and pay (for those that are on LI)
i think the most important would be the top 2
commuting can be a pain, but i was told by a veteran teacher friend that, if you love your school that much you could always move closer its what you are willingly to sacrifice
i wouldnt stay somewhere just because its on LI, (altho i wouldnt quit) i would be actively looking for a job, and if something comes along that is better i will take it!
i am not happy where i am in the city and my commute is about an hour and 15mins....so changing districts is what ive been trying to so i feel your pain
also if your not a happy teacher because of these things, how much of it shows while you are teaching?
good luck, i hope this helps!

Re: What would make you change districts?
I'm going to eventually have to change districts. I have a 45 minute commute now, and while that's not terrible, my school gets out on the late side, so I wind up getting home later than I'd like. When my children are in school, I'd like to be able to be home sooner to spend more time with them and possibly even pick them up from school!
Quality of life is very important to me! And spending time in the car is not quality time, IMO.
