Knitting club?

Does anyone belong to a local or internet knitting club and maybe meet and knit?

Re: Knitting club?

No. The only knitting club I belong to is when my mom and I get together and both knit. Although these days, with the baby, that really isn't happening. (She would rather play with him.) The majority of my knitting is being done while I'm pumping at work. And because of that, I'm having a hard time finishing my projects. It's easy to do the knitting, but not so easy to do the finishing. I have a sweater and one piece outfit that I still need to finish sewing together. But I've also started knitting a cardigan.

I look on here every so often to see if there are any knitters, but there aren't that many of us.

Re: Knitting club?

My mom and both grandmas were knitters. My mom and her mom are still "active" knitters. My mom makes herself great sweaters. Just like the one you would buy at the store. My grandma made a sweater for DS. She knits ALL THE TIME. I learned as a teenager and LOVED it. The 3 of us used to knit together. Now that I live on LI that's no longer possible.

I made several sweaters but did not knit for 15 years or so. I just started again with that blanket.

I would love to meet people and have "knitting" sessions. I guess it would be easier if DS was a bit older but right now he keeps me busy and I have no real time to knit. I really want to though. It's relaxing to me.

So are my grandmother (Nana) and mother. I learned to knit from my mom about 8 years ago. I started with fuzzy scarves and worked into sweaters. One of my first sweaters was a fair isle I made for DH when we were first dating (good thing he married me Chat Icon ).

DS has sweaters from both Nana and Great Nana, as well as a blanket from Great Nana. But neither of them knit like they used to. My mother developed problems with her hands a few years ago and has pain, especially when she knits too much; my Nana is going to be 88 in a couple of weeks and her hands and eyes just don't work like they used to. (My mom says she has a lot of unfinished sweaters in her home in FL)

Our DSs are only a couple of months apart in age, so we're probably both going through the same thing trying to figure out how to find the time to knit.

Yes. That would be a good idea!

Maybe other people would be interested too. It could be for all levels of course.

I'm in....i'm soooo trying to progress past scarves. I always get stuck on certain stitches and no matter how many websites I look at, I can never figure it out. I'm one of those that has to "see" it and then do it. I am a self taught knitter and could use all the tips I can get. I did manage to make these cute little baby booties but the baby bib that also came with the kit turned otu to be a disaster.

Re: Knitting club?

That sounds like a good idea. Where is everyone located? I'm in southwestern Suffolk- but I'm also used to travelling.

Also-- I'm just curious--- Does anyone else use the Continental method? I think most people in the US use the English method--but since my family if from Europe and the teaching was passed down mother to daughter, we use this one.

Re: Knitting club?

I have no idea what method I am using. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I am from Europe so I guess that answers the question.

What is the US method?

I live in Eastern Nassau. I am off on Mondays if people are interested doing it during the day. Otherwise, it would be on Saturdays for me.

I am not sure I can do a weekly meeting but maybe a bi-monthly or monthly. I like the monthly so we have time to do our projects and show our progress between meetings.

What do people think?

Availabiliy
Frequency
How long would we meet?

ETA: when I knit the yarn is in my right hand and I "loop" around the right needle
I am so excited to get this going. Really!

I think you do the English method. (If you see the link I attached it says the yarn is in the right hand and looped over.) The yarn is in my left hand while I'm knitting.

Availability: Saturdays are probably best. (I can also do Wednesdays)
Frequency: I agree with either monthly or bi-monthly.
Duration: A couple of hours

Re: Knitting club?

I love to knit...I wish I knew how to crochet, as I hear it's easier to make blankets (faster). I have not graduated from anything more complex than scarves and blankets Chat Icon

ETA: I taught myself about 2 years ago from a book and the internet. My grandma used to knit like a pro..but when I was younger I was not interested and she died many years ago. The fact that I taught myself, makes my mom happy, because it was her mom that was the knitter...but my mom never really took to it either.

I happen to find knitting sweaters so much more fun than knitting blankets and scarves. In some ways the knitting actually moves faster. I would be happy to help you with the finishing if we get this knitting club off the ground.

(And Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon for teaching yourself to knit.)

Re: Knitting club?

When would anyone want to do it?

I am off Mondays and Saturdays. I prefer Mondays but we can see what everybody prefer. "Whatever" day is picked...we could meet that 1st day of each month.

Input/ideas????

I work on Mondays Chat Icon So it would have to be Saturdays for me.

I think it's a good idea for it to be a set day each month.

That sounds good. But I just can't do this Sat (Feb 2nd) because I'm going to a GTG.
