Anyone have a Bachelors Degree in a Different Field?
Other than Education related!
Here's my story: Went to St Joe's in Brooklyn for a year...didn't really do so well and wanted to move out of my mom's house so I went to work full time and pretty much quit school. I went to Brooklyn College but didn't really apply myself. Because of the above stated, I am now an Active Duty Marine and will be a civilian again in 2011. I am finishing up my Bachelors now (7 years later) and it will be in Professional Aeronautics.
I thought I'd like to work in Aviation since I enjoy it now but I know deep down inside that my true calling is teaching. DH and I are moving to Indiana in 2011 when we kiss the USMC goodbye. I looked into the Teaching Fellows program there and threw the idea around in my head for a while. I still have a little over 2 years of USMC time and they pay for me to go to school so I might as well get a Masters. SOOOOO!!! I looked into a Master of Arts in Education from University of South Carolina and I AM SO PUMPED ABOUT IT!!!! It is a 100% employment rate with that degree in SC. I won't be here.
DO you think because I don't have a Bachelors in Education and a Master of Arts in Teaching I will have a problem finding a job in a school?
Thanks, if you made it this far!

Re: Anyone have a Bachelors Degree in a Different Field?
you shouldnt have too much of a problem but you may want to get a second masters afterward in some sort of specialty like science, literacy, esl or special ed.
sometimes principals like teachers who have a background in something other than education
plus it seems easier to get jobs newhere except NYC or LI
good luck on whatever you decide.

I actually really enjoy school and just want to keep going!!!! I'm addicted!!! Too little too late huh? Should have loved school 3 years ago and I'd be done! Everything happens for a reason though!

Re: Anyone have a Bachelors Degree in a Different Field?
my undergrad is in journalism... and i have my masters in secondary ed... i needed to get some extra undergrad credits in art in order to have a certification area...
HTH!
eta: i got a job right when i was finished with student teaching, however, since then i have sent my resumes out a lot, and i do think it sometimes gets overlooked because my undergrad is in journalism and not in art...

Re: Anyone have a Bachelors Degree in a Different Field?
For me, BA in Psych and Spanish and MA in Education - got a job after finishing student teaching, before finishing my masters. Look to get your Ed. degree in a high need area and you should have no problem. Good luck!

Re: Anyone have a Bachelors Degree in a Different Field?
I have a masters and a bachelors in a different field - and i think people like it. I have a bs in community helath and a masters in public policy and urban affairs (grantwriting, running non profit programs, identifying needs, etc.) - its all about how you "market" yourself too. I love teaching - sure, its hard to get a job but you keep at it - ironically when i first got my masters in teaching i wound up getting pregnant with dd (surprise! ) so i subbed but when i deicded to go back i started subbing and wound up getting a leave replacement mid year and this yr a job teaching....
if its where your heart is, go for it! if you have questions, feel free to fm me! good luck!

Re: Anyone have a Bachelors Degree in a Different Field?
My step-mom had her bachelors in business, and then got her Master's in K-8.
A lot of schools have programs tailored to those in other fields who want to get their masters in education.
Good luck!

Re: Anyone have a Bachelors Degree in a Different Field?
My bachelors degree is in biological science not in education and I did not have any difficulties finding a job. Since you are going to get your masters in ed there should be no problem.

My Bachelor's Degree is in English with minors in Theater and Psychology. I hadn't taken a single Education class until I started my coursework towards my Masters.

Re: Anyone have a Bachelors Degree in a Different Field?
Actually I wish my undergrad. was NOT in Education... I feel like my Masters is what got me my current job so it would've been the same thing anyways except i would have had some more diversty...
Since you are getting the Masters in Education anyway, you'll be fine! If anything, you will have so much moreexperience... look at all the science and math background you have with your aeronautics or whatever it was ... also, schools LOVE military people... you know how to lead and how to be led...
you will be an asset to any school. some of the finest teachers i know have NO education background undergrad. or even grad. the people that bring life experience and other skills to the table do a great job.... you will need a Masters though and your teaching licese though---once you have that, you're all set!
GOOD LUCK!
