Your thoughts on this and how to handle...

After working at my current place of employment for over 4 years; over 1 year p/t (3 days a week, 10 hours a day), one of the bosses is claiming that our lunch break was never an hour and has always been 45 minutes. He is now enforcing this "old" rule and claiming it's always been this. Never, in 4 years, has this been addressed previously. I really don't know what to think. It's so very petty. Does he really think this will motivate us to work any harder? It just makes me want to "punch the clock" and never come in early or stay late. I'm so tired of all this micromanagment.

You could ask him if he wants you to start keeping track of your time when you stay over/come in early IF THAT WOULD BE TO YOUR ADVANTAGE.

While lunch breaks are required by law, I believe 45 minutes is ample time provided that you get 15 minute breaks.

I'll double check for you now.

I agree but it's really the point of it. It just gets under my skin that he's claiming that it's always been that way. Well, why wasn't it addressed 4 or 3 or 2 or 1 year ago? Why now?

Probably because someone else is taking advantage & ruining it for the rest of the group.

Maybe ask him what he is trying to accomplish? Does he feel that staff isn't working the hours he's paying them?

I actually do plan on asking these questions when he brings it up to me. It's a small office so it isn't like there is a lot of poeple to take advantage of it. The funny thing is that the other part timer was only alloted 1/2 hour for lunch because of her short days so she is actually gettting an increase.

This sounds about right to me. I also think that some people can't handle not working in a really structured environment, and this does ruin it for the group sometimes.

I've seen it especially in the last 2 places I worked at......we allowed our staff to work from home/the field, but it was getting to the point where a few of them totally took advantage of that to the point where I got stuck doing all their work/taking all their calls/doing all the follow up. After that, I make a certain amount of office hours mandatory.

My advice is to roll with the punches for now. Talk to him about your concerns and maybe he will let up after a few months. It's also been my experience that the person(s) ruining for the rest of the group often hang themselves sooner or later.......it's often a process to get to that point though.......

do they have a company handbook that states this?? if not then thats not fair, and he should look into getting one made up with all the company rules written out so everyone knows, and then its REALLY the employees fault.
