Step Throat and Tonsils being taken out?
I have been having strep throat over and over again. I had it less then a month ago and it has come back again.
Has anyone been told to have their tonsils out after having strep throat over and over again?

DH did - he's put off having the surgery though. He gets strep and ear infections very easily and often.

at 19, I was a 'nanny' for 3 children. I had strep throat 8 times in 10 months. I got my tonsils out that summer and have not relly gotten sick since then (over 10 years) ... I still get sinusitus but never throat issues.

I have been told that it is an option for me. One doctor thinks that I have a constant low grade tonsil infection. I have read about procedures to shrink the tonsils and partial tonsillectomies. If those become more common, I will try that. I am afraid of tonsillectomy as an adult.

I had recurring tonsillitis and strep throughout my teens and early 20s. When I had my tonsils out, the ENT dr. told me it really wouldn't do much for my strep, would only prevent tonsillitis. I don't think he knew what he was talking about - I haven't had strep in 8 years, so yes, I think it could help.

I had recurring strep infections together with tonsillitis for most of my life. I don't think I have had strep THROAT since they were taken out.
I had a horrible experience with my tonsillectomy though - hemorrhaging and pain and 2 subsequent surgeries - so I think I would prefer the strep throat.

my sister did... she was constantly getting sore throats and losing her voice. at times her throat was so sore she could barely swallow.
She got them taken out at 26, but has never lost her voice or gotten strep or any other throat infection again. she jokes that she's lost her "sexy" voice... but she sounds and feels so much better.

When I was in 4th grade I got mine out for that exact reason. I never got strep again.

I used to get strep at least once a year from 5-13. I never got my tonsils out. I heard that removing them makes getting it less likely, but that you can still get strep even if you get your tonsils out.

I had to get my tonsils out, not because of strep, just tonsilitis. My ent was against taking them out at first since it is a difficult surgery for an adult (I was 30 at the time), but within 2 months he agreed that they needed to come out.

The jury is still out...some docs will some won't. I believe if you have multiple cases in 1 year they will consider it, but it's not a surgery they take lightly. I would talk to your doctor about it and see. Are you taking all the meds until they're gone? Maybe you need something else? Your body can get immune to some things. I can't take zithromaz becasue i've had it so many times it just doesn't work for me. Hope i've helped and feel better

I had mine taken out at 21 after recurring tonsillitis/strep throat multiple times a year. Haven't had it in the 10 years since.

I had recurrent tonsillitis, but not too much strep. I just had my tonsils out at the age of 30!  FM me if you have any questions. I didn't have a hard time with it at all.

I had mine out at 28 bcs of recurrent strep throat. I haven't had Strep in four years.
