Ever reasearch something online...
and after you get some info, you are sorry you did? I was researching on CTSnet.org (Cardiothorasic Surgery Net). I wanted to see if anxiety was a side effect of heart surgery. Some of the chat boards on WebMD said yes and my doctor said it is possible. So, being the way I am, I wanted hard numbers... percentages, examples, clinical facts.
Well, while researching this I saw an article about a 13 year old boy who has what I do (L-TGA) and had my same surgery! I was so excited at first. Then, I read the article and it said he died at age 15, two years after surgery. So now I am sitting here, freaked out, scared, and my mind is racing. I had some anxiety issues on the way back from Hawaii at the airport and I wanted to research how I can fix the anxiety I was feeling.
Sorry for the long rambling post, I needed to get that off my chest and tell someone.
DH is working on a project for work (he is a tech guy) due at midnight so I do not want to bother him with this right now.
ETA: I just need to get my mind off this article.

Re: Ever reasearch something online...
When I needed some extra tests last year, the first thing out of my doctor's mouth was "Don't look on WebMD".
I hope the anxiety passes soon. I am sure the article was posted because it was an exception.

Re: Ever reasearch something online...
I personally think that the Internet is extremely dangerous in terms of researching medical information. In the past, I have found conflicting information about the same diseases and disorders on different websites that has put me into a serious panic when I should have more faith in myself and my health care providers. I have the right to seek second opinions if I so choose knowing full well that doctors do not always have the answers nor are they always right. I have seen all too often people scared sh!tless because of something they see on the net. I can't and won't do it anymore to myself.

When I discovered I had HPV, my gyno told me to NOT go onto the internet, because all I would find was scary stories. I did, and she was right... the internet is not always reliable - so talk to your doctor about all your fears and concerns!

Re: Ever reasearch something online...
Well, I had a good cry for a few minutes and then I decided that I will not research this topic anymore until I speak to my cardiologist. The one good thing about the research I did tonight is that it seems that most patients have depression or anxiety 6-12 months AFTER surgery. This blew my mind. At least I know I am not the only one and that is is somewhat normal.
Plus, I did find info on this program at Columbia: Columbia Integrative Medicine Program
This program is ALL about combining traditional/conventional medicine with yoga, guided imagery, and other healing modalities. Since I had my surgery there and my cardiologist is on the same team as Memhet Oz, maybe I would be a candidate for the program? Maybe even as a clinical trial? I will ask when I call tomorrow. I cannot go on more meds , I just can't do it. I do not want to go to a anxiety therapist and be handed a prescription for more pills, with more side effects.
I just want be the person I was before all of this, KWIM? UGH.
Thanks girls

Re: Ever reasearch something online...
I did this to myself last april by typing in some symptoms I had...
I had such anxiety for over a month, I thought I was really, really just dying.
It was horrible

Re: Ever reasearch something online...
I did that 1.5 years ago. My fingers and hand started to lose functionality and muscle tone. I was diagnosing myself with all sorts of muscle deteriorating diseases, some of which would kill me slowly and horribly over a year or two. I was honestly sick to my stomach for a while. I went to the neurologist, and he started apologizing about the fact that I would need surgery to move a pinched nerve. A pinched nerve! That was awesome! No body devouring disease, no long-term deterioration, etc. I was never so happy to hear that I needed semi-major surgery!
I'm much more wary of what I research on the web now.....
