Re: Carpenters Union in Manhatten?
My father just retired from 608 after over 30 years, my broter just got in last year--- and honestly, he got in because of my Dad. My brother still had to go through the apprentice program, etc. but defiintely having an "in" helped.
I would suggest going down to their office downtown (also one in the Bronx) and inquire about sitting for the exam. you sit for the test and then based on that, you're called up and it then goes from there.
Let me know if I can help with anything else or if you have any specific questions. i could ask my Dad or brother. Also my BIL and FIL are in the Long Island local based in Hauppage. that could be an option too... but the pay in the city is a bit better, but not much better, if at all, once you factor in commuting costs.

Re: Carpenters Union in Manhatten?
Thanks-- My husband did go to the union on Long Island. Took the test. There are 300 people on the list. He was a union carpenter, then worked on his own. He has 27 years experience. Does your FIL or BIL work for a union company looking to hire? Thanks again

I can ask my BIL... but my brother's company jsut had a bunch of lay-ffs (thank god, he was not one) so i dont' think they're hiring anytime soon.
Also, since he was previously a union carpenter, can he get back in???? i would think that would be a bit easier then starting from scratch???
