What Would You Have Done?
So yesterday I was covering for a kindergarten class all day when a student had told me 2 other students were passing notes of an innapropriate nature....so i take the notes which contained the words "sex" "yes" and "no" so immediately I'm like "WHOA RED FLAG" lemme call the guidance counselor so i did...but no answer....so it was towards the end of the day and im like someone higher up needs to know about this....so i call the office looking for the AP and shes not there i tell the aide well can you send her to my room when u find her....well another teacher (my mentor) came into my room (random i thought) and i see the AP i was looking for by her room....so i tell her hey tell Ms. X to come over here i need to ask her something....so shes comes over and i ask her well what should i do and she says take it up with the guidance counselor....i said well i couldnt reach her so i wanted to know what to do like should i tell parents afterschool etc?
so anyways i spoke to 1 parent after school and i went in and wrote a report (the guidnace counselor told me to do this when i finnally got to her) and im like ok all is well
THEN this morning the AP tells me well i think you should really be more wise about what you call me into your room for, you persisted to have me come in even after i sent your mentor in....(i didnt know the AP sent her cuz i wanted to talk to her) I was like ummmmk and she goes thats your mentor shes the one who can help you with things like that and thats why she was there.
all i thought to myself all day was like huh ***? i'm trying to communicate a sort of serious issue i think and somehow i got a stern talking to....i mean 5 yr olds shouldnt be writing notes that contain the word sex in it
i was really trying to figure out what do to as well as cover my butt in the situatation ugh....
so really what would you have done?

I would have done the same thing as you. You can never be too safe with these types of things. I think your AP is a b*tch!!!!

Re: What Would You Have Done?
i would have held onto the note and told the teacher when she came back. they weren't being physical with each other, and are only 5 so there isn't really a reason to take immediate action. nothing was going to happen with a note. i wouldn't have called for help from an administrator to take care of a note--regardless of content unless someone's life was at stake.
a sub should never talk to parents about ANY issue. it is the teacher's place.

I agree. Also, if your mentor came into the room, that is what she is there for. I would have asked her how she thought you should handle it. You dont know if the administrator is dealing with another serious issue (especially from the sound of the school you are at, they could be).

see the thing is that i cover for so many classes at random most of the time that when i tell the classroom teacher when something happens where a student is misbehaving or an incident occurs they tell me to contact the parent, i just never faced something of that nature b4 so i was unsure of the steps to take...
plus my mentor didnt tell me thats why she came in the room so how was i supposed to know (she was yelling at the para to help out which the para wasnt doing anything really)
theres a lot of miscommunication at my school

Re: What Would You Have Done?
It's a shame the AP wasn't more supportive. You couldn't reach the guidance counselor and had no idea why your mentor came in - given that situation, and then seeing the person you'd been trying to get a hold of right there, I might've done the same thing when I was subbing. I wouldn't have spoken to the parent, but if teachers have suggested it to you, I can understand why you did. I guess lesson learned for next time - now you know how the AP handles things.

I have to agree as well.

yea i feel unsupported more times than u can believe, my mentor is awesome, but talking to the AP just scares me its like if i say something to her about anything she'll find someway to talk down to me, and then if i dont say something i get yelled at
i literally have anixety attacks everyday b4 entering the school
