Generic BCP?
So on my last visit my gyno changed my pill and when I went to the pharmacy they told me he prescribed the generic version of Estrostep (I've taken Estrostep before)....Now being an@l and crazy I of course worry that it isn't as effective....I read tons of stuff saying it is...but can anyone else calm my fears? Or relate to my an@lness? lol.

Re: Generic BCP?
Generic drugs MUST be bioequivalent to their brand name counterparts.
I assure you that the generic must be as efficacious as the brand name drug -- and as safe.

Re: Generic BCP?
I was on Generic BCP for about 5 years & just came off. I didn't see a difference from the name brand one...

Re: Generic BCP?
I was on Generic BCPs for a number of years (I am now on a pill that doesn't have a generic equivalent).
The only difference is the price and the packaging - as Kara said, the generic counterparts must be bio-equivalent.
Overall, I'm a huge fan of generics, they end up saving you a lot of $$!

Re: Generic BCP?
Generics are fine. I wish they made a generic of my BCP, but they don't so I have to pay so much more $$ for it!

This is true, but it doesn't mean that your body will respond exactly the same on a generic.
I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen for about 5 year and it "went generic", so I got the generic and for months I had the WORST periods and cramps. I couldn't get out of bed for 2 days a month
I went back to my doctor and since nothing in my life style had changed, she said that it must have been the generic and that your body can react differently to a generic, so she put a "DAW" on my prescription and it went back to the name brand and within a month my body was back to normal. I was paying $50 for a pill pack because my old insurance succks.
I went off the pill in 2006 and had DS in 2007 and am now on Ortho Lo b/c it has not "gone generic" yet. I wish I could take a generic pill, that would be awesome.
I thought I was nuts because I always thought that since the drugs were the same, you have to have the same reaction to them---not true

Re: Generic BCP?
I had to go through 2 generics of Ortho Tri Cyclen to get to one that worked for me. The other two gave me side effects. From what I understand from my Doc. the active ingredients in generics must be the same as the name brand but the other ingredients can be different. Generics should be as effective but your body may react different to it.

Re: Generic BCP?
I take Estrostep and pay in full b/c of insurance (really sux) i asked how much the generic was because they just came out with it and it was only 5 dollars less. So i stuck with brand name Estrostep. Believe me if it was worth it i would have gone on the generic. I've been on generic bcp before and there is no difference.
