BC: Break Through Bleeding QUestion

I have been taking Lo Estrin for about 6 mths now. I know in the beginning break through bleeding is normal, but I seem to get a "period" every 2 weeks or so.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I don't know if I should give it more time or see my GYN. I really am thinking about finding another BC option without hormones because I think I am very emotional on the pill.

I asked my dr about an IUD the last time and he said he doesn't do them. Has anyone heard of this also?

Sorry for the questions, its been over 2 years since I used any form of BC and I really want to use nothing hormonal but am scared of keeping track of my cycle and don't want to go to condoms, since we haven't used them in years. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: BC: Break Through Bleeding QUestion

I have tried a bunch of pills, but either i too was very emotional or I had spotting. It seems like I couldn't find a pill that didn't have some sort of annoying side effect for me. Back in June I switched to nuvaring, which i really like, b/c I had adhd and cannot remember to take my pills at all. It goes in the sunday after your period and you take it out 3 Sundays later. I haven't spotted at all on it. The doctor did ask me if I was interested in an IUD, but I didn't want something that would stay inside for 5-10 years, I don't know, to me thats not something I would do.

I think you should ask your doctor to change pills, usually they tell you to try it for a few months to see if the spotting stops, but I know its annoying, so I usually tell them to switch sooner. It doesn't hurt to ask, you have two valid reasons for a switch.

I had a lot of issues with the mini pill when I was BF, similar to what you are having. Before kids, I took OrthoCyclen for 8 years without any problems at all.

Now I have the Mirena IUD and its the best form of BCever for me. I'm puzzled as to why your OB doesn't do them, but it could be that he's just not trained for it. I would definitely look into an IUD, I am very happy with mine.

Not to be too personal here but is it hard to put in/take out? Do you feel it on a normal basis? Does DH feel it?

I have been on EVERYTHING. Lo Estrin, Depo Provera, the patch, Nuvaring ugh. Anyways, I had the same problem with Loestrin, I had the breakthrough bleeding and my gyno at the time switched me to another pill.

Definitely reccomend the nuvaring, I have been on it for like a year now and it's onderful. It's not hard to put in at all. Taking it out isn't too bad either. You don't feel it at all and DH does not either. HTH!

P.S. My doctor says that the nuvaring is better because it's a slow constant release of hormones versus when you take the pill and you have a surge and a drop of levels throughout the day.

Re: BC: Break Through Bleeding QUestion

I called and will see my gyn on Friday. Anyway I was talking to the PA on the phone and she said my dr doesn't like IUD's because of the risks involved with entering a foreign object into your body. SHe said there are other options they will discuss with me on friday. Thanks again for your helP

My friend was on Seasonal and had the same problem that you are having with LoEstro. I use Ortho Tricyclen and have had no problems.

I really want to use nothing hormonal

Isn't the IUD composed of hormones as well? The hormones cause you to not release an egg.

I thought there was an IUD that didn't have hormones

The Paraguard is a copper IUD and does not contain hormones. However, some women get really heavy periods with it.

Re: BC: Break Through Bleeding QUestion

I've had problems like that as well. My gyno told me it was because the dose was too low. On those low dose ones spotting happens a lot. I switched to nuvaring. I thought it was great. Sometimes it was hard to get in or out. I usually did it in the shower. But now my dermatologist put me on yaz because of my acne, and i seem to be doing well with this bc too.
