Lithium

Does anyone have any experience with this drug or know anyone who has? I know it is used to treat bi-polar disorder, but I was wondering if anyone had any first hand experience, or know of any positive or negative experiences. You can FM me if you want.

Re: Lithium

Well....I have never taken it but I have seen many who have. It seems to be an "older" drug these days. I have heard it's affective, and works well, but the side effects can be bad in long term. That's not for everybody but I mostly saw the long term affects. There are really great new drugs out there now....I would ask why Lithium and review/research why.

I work with adolescent boys, some of which are on medications. Lithium does tend to be an "older" drug, but if all other drugs have been tried and weren't successful, sometimes we have to put them on Lithium. If you go on Lithium, you need to get your blood levels checked very frequently to make sure the levels are within therapeutic range. So, its a little bit harder to manage.

Other drugs that we have our kids on are Seroquel, Eskalith (we don't see too much of anymore, but we used to), and Abilify, Tegretol and Lamictal (mood stabilizers that help with Bipolar D/O), Depakote.

Abilify is on one the newest and has the least amount of side effects. With Lithium, there is a fine line between therapeutic levels and dangerous levels. I would not want to take that chance.

Re: Lithium

Lithium is a tried and true choice for some people who are bipolar. I'm fairly close with someone who is. Her doctors have tried to make changes to her medication and she always lands back on Lithium, sometimes in combination with other medications. She remains stable for many years at a time on Lithium and it has been a lifesaver.

same here for my sister. it's a heavy drug, but is really one of the best ones for bi-polar disorder.

I would say that Depakote is the newest most used drug for the tx of bipolar disorder. It comes in an extended release version as well. Eskalith is Lithium, juts a different formulation. Abilify, Seroquel and Zyprexa are all antipsychotics that have also been approved for tx of bipolar disorder, although they are not usually first line. tegretol and lamictal are also used, but not as frequently

Re: Lithium

I know someone who really got stabilized on lithium. after many many drugs it was really the only thing that helped her and it really made her go from off the deep end to stable. I'm not sure about the side effects, we're not that close, but I know she's trying to get off the meds now because she's been on it for awhile.
