Guidance Counselor Openings??

Guidance counseling vent: How I ended up in the field with the worst job market is beyond me. I'd like a job as a counselor in a school, but it seems like it will never happen. I've applied for over two years, again and again- I never make it past the first interview- if I even get an interview. The whole thing is sooo frustrating.

Where are you applying? I am currently in school for guidance counseling. As soon as I get my 30 credits for certification I am switching from English teacher to counselor, but I am staying in NYC. I think it would be easier for you to get a job in NYC than in LI.

It is a very very difficult field to get a job in, but don't give up hope! It took me 2.5 years to get a perm job, I had leave replacements before that and then was able to get into a really top district on Long Island. Do you have a good relationship with the school you interned with? Any connections through that?

Have you thought about looking for a job in a college? There are multiple offices that could use your skills as a counselor (counseling, academic advising, career services...)

Just make sure that you don't say you are looking for a job in a college b/c you couldn't get a job in a high school or grade school.
