How Do I Ask...

How do I ask for a raise? I am going going to have my review in April sometime. I have no idea what they are going to offer me, but I also want to ask for something.

I have NEVER asked for a raise never. The whole company took a negotating class , so I feel like I have to negoitate something. I want what calculates out to 12 % raise, but in numbers is not that much.

I feel like I can't neogiate with my boss because he is my boss. We have a good relationship. I also feel like there have been to many mistakes that I have done recently that have been brought to light, and make me not a good candidate for a raise.

HELP, I do good work, and work hard so I deserve it.

Re: How Do I Ask...

make a list of everything you do well

any big projects you worked on

be prepared- esp. b/c of the mistakes you have recently made- it might be an uphill battle

but you can get what you don't ask for

good luck!

Re: How Do I Ask...

Yeah I feel like its def an uphill battle no matter what...

My mistakes have mainly been because I have so much going on and not enough time in the day, but who doesn't these days. I can just tell my boss I'll be more thorugh and have taken steps to fix it.

List of accomplishments that is always hard for me...but I should start making it now.

Re: How Do I Ask...

For me I've always gotten raises by changing employers completely.

Re: How Do I Ask...

When your company does the review, do they have the employees do a self-evaluation which is then reviewed by the managers and discussed with the employees or do the managers do the whole thing? If you do a self-evaluation, it will give you a good start on putting together a list of your strengths as suggested by other posters.

If your strengths and weaknesses are brought up in your review, obviously acknowledge them but also point out you have learned from them. Any reputable company will realize there is always room for improvement and not penalize you for honest errors.

There is a big difference between employees who try their best and make some errors and those who slack off and still expect to be rewarded for it. I'm guessing you fall into the first category so just be honest and ask for what you want. You may be surprised in the end.
