Re: activities in Costa Rica
Whitewater rafting on the Reventazon or Pacuare!! You can do a half day or full day on the river.
We also floated the Sarapiqui and saw tons of wildlife.

Re: activities in Costa Rica
You're going to LOVE Costa Rica!!!
MA: Definately go to the park there. Lots and lots of wildlife!
This was basically our itinerary when we were there (we spent the entire time in Manuel Antonio) - Also, here is
My Review of Costa Rica
Day 1 - Manuel Antonio National Park
Day 2 - Carara National Park (bird watching, an hour 1/2 north of Manuel Antonio)
Day 3- Damas Island Mangrove Boat Tour. This was the only day it rained and rained HARD just about the entire day.
Day 4 - A.M - Beach P.M back to Manuel Antonio National Park
Day 5 - A.M Catamaran Boat for what we thought would be Dolphin Watching (saw none), The anchored for a while so people can snorkle and they served lunch P.M. Went to a local Nature Reserve walked around the Butterfly Farm.
Day 6 - Horseback riding through the mountains, got to swim at the base of a waterfall, followed by lunch on a ranch.
Day 7 - DH went back to Manuel Antoino National Park, I went to the beach before we headed back to San Jose for our early morning flight the next day.

We only did day tours. Mornings to be exact. Alot of the tours we did started early in the morning which was okay with us, since the howler monkeys were our alarm clock.. every morning at 5:30 on the dot! One of the best tours we did was to Carara National Park where the Scarlett Macaws are. It was just us and the tour guide, and even my husband who hates birds (he's terrified of them!) absolutely loved this tour.

Re: activities in Costa Rica
I LOVED Arenas del mar! DH and I were nervous after reading the limited reviews on tripadvisor, but the hotel exceeded our expectations! The restaurant is wonderful! We had a full breakfast each morning (try the corn pancakes). We also had dinner there our first night which was one of the best meals we had. There is a family of monkeys that live on the property. We saw more monkeys there than at the park! You have access to two parts of the beach. One part is a little more private... the security guard will setup your chair and you can order drinks from the bar. The other part is the public beach where you can access the strip. We stayed in room 702B which is closest to the lobby and had the best view. Let me know if you have any questions.

We went to the same exact places when we went to CR. In arenal we stayed at Tabacon which has the hot springs attached to it- you can go if you are not staying at the hotel, it was amazing, you should definitely spend some time there. In monteverde we hiked through the cloud forest. Monteverde is a very small town, with a lot of italian restaurants, it was strange, lol. We went to an italian restaurant one night and a pizza place another night. There is also an ice cream shop with amazing homeade ice cream. They don't speak english there though, so you need to know a little spanish to order the ice cream and pay for it. In manuel antonio, there are lots of nature preserves. We went to the national park and some of the other preserves in the area, one that had an amazing butterfly garden. You can also go the beach there, its beattiful, but the rip tides can be pretty strong. Manuel Antonio has more of a touristy feel than arenal and monteverde, lots of bars and restaurants. There's one restaurant that has a big airplane in the front that is very good and so cheap!
Most of the areas have a lot of the same activities, like horseback riding and zip lining in the rainforest. I definitely recommend both.
CR was the best vacation I have ever been on. We can't wait to go back someday.
ETA: I was looking at MrsRbk's itinerary and I think we did the same horseback riding trip, except we had breakfast at the ranch instead of lunch. It sounds the same because we swam by the waterfall too.
