who knows alot about timeshares?
I want to buy a resale timeshare. I want one that I can use for whichever week I want, not a set week each year.
There are tons advertised on line but does anyone know which sites are better and more reputable than others?

I dont know much about which sites would be the best to buy from, but my suggestion is to buy the cheapest one you find- even if it's not at a place you think you'd go to often, or even at all. As long as you buy into a company that allows exchanges- like RCI, then you can use the timeshare anywhere so long as you book in advance.
Another perk of belonging to RCI is that they do promotions called "Last Call." If you have some flexibility in travel time, you can get a vacation really cheap. In addition to the week you own, you can buy additional vacation weeks. They usually only post 6-8 weeks in advance, but a 1 bedroom is like $219 for a week, and a 2 bedroom is only $250 for a week. We did one a few years ago in Playa del Carmen and we're using one next month to go to Virginia. We're not even going for a full week, but for the price it's still totally worth it.

Interval International does this too!
ETA - We have a timeshare through Starwood and if you trade through II, you can use it any week of the year. If we trade in the Starwood network - we are assigned a certain number of points so we may not get a full week at certain resorts (ours is one of the lowest priced ones available)>

i don't know a lot about them, but all i've heard over and over from people is DON'T buy one.... the money you spend in dues for your week is usually more than you would pay to go somewhere and you're not locked in to certain places or times.

my dh and i got an rci time share from mil as a gift. it has been great and times and hard to use at times.
it really depends on how you travel, we went to sedona last year on a trade and got a beautiful place. we learned how to trade better and you just have to stay on top of something if there is something specific you want to trade for. like literally staying on the page and refreshing constantly all day to see what's available.
we are going to napa next month on a purchased week. we spend under $700 for a two bedroom, two bath condo!
they are great, you just have to learn how to use the system, which can be pretty involved. but there are great perks, like those posted above and i know with rci, we can even trade our week for credit towards a cruise!!
my mil bought ours and i think all of hers through ebay!
good luck! i think they are worth it, we are really looking forward to using it when we have kids in the future, you get such a better place to stay rather than a hotel room!!

marriot timeshares are great too, you can rack up points if you dont use it and trade them towards airfare i have used this site before.....and had no problems

you're doing the right thing by going with a resale.. i actually brought my timeshare on ebay.. total cost $2300 which included closing, deed transfers and dues for hte first year.. i have a set week which i can trade into rci or II for points and go anywhere.. and since it was a 3bedroom lock out i actually get 2 weeks instead of one..
check ebay out!!

Where do you actually own? $2300 for a 3bedroom is a GREAT price!
As for a PP who mentioned not getting a timeshare because of the dues, I respectfully disagree. The dues are, at most about $500 a year. Even if you paid $150 for trading costs, you would still spend over $650 for a hotel room for a wek. With a timeshare you get bedrooms, full kitchens and living rooms. It's totally worth it for family travelling.
What is not worth it, is to attend timeshare presentations at a resort. Yes, you do get freebies, but in the grand scheme of things, it's not worth it to give up 2-3 hours of your time to leave completely frustrated.

This may be true in certain units but, it isn't always the case.
We pay less than $500 a year in maintenance and received many additional benefits when we purchased it (hotel points, extra weeks, etc).
We were able to only pay the $150 exchange fee for two weeks of lodging in Hawaii for our honeymoon (and we stayed at beautiful places). We also received bonus weeks that year and went to Los Cabos and send ILs to Puerto Vallarta. In Hawaii alone, we'd be paying more than $150/night otherwise.
We bought in 2005 and it's pretty much paid for itself already.
ETA: It also guarantees you will take a vacation each year - when you are trying to save $$, usually vacationing is the first thing to go.
There are a lot of timeshares up for sale right now supposedly because of the economy so it's a great time to buy!

The price I will pay is $1.00 plus a $50 resort deed transfer and $199 closing costs.
The dues I will pay starting next year.
There are tons like this on ebay!

Its called the summer bay resort in orlando. I dont think it is the greatest based on reviews but my purpose of owning is to go to different places anyway.

It is with RCI. We checked out Orange Lake a few years ago and my husband still talks about how we should have bought there at that time.

It is with RCI. We checked out Orange Lake a few years ago and my husband still talks about how we should have bought there at that time.
We love it there! It's my parents timeshare and growing up we went every year. Then we weren't there for years and went with DS last September and we just loved it! We only left the resort 1 day, there was more than enough to do right on site. We're going back in June and friends with a DS 3 months older than Luca are coming for 4 days. The boys are going to golf every day while the mommies and their boys hang out at the lazy river!

We own at the Galleon in Key West. We go every year or we rent it which is no problem, we belong to the RCI and our yearly maintence is 800 a year and taxes are 96.00. It is well worth it. to rent the place its well over 3400 a week and ours is paid for, 2 br2bth kitchen w/d we would never get that for 1000. I also know that I have a vacation planned every year and I dont have to do anything.. I LOVE IT
