how to know if you have enough yarn?
i have some recycled silk yarn.
i would love to make a lace shawl to wear for my cousin's wedding. i just don't know if i would have enough.
does anyone know how to calculate to see if you have enough yarn for a particular pattern?

OK, I'm not really that good at this. My mom or the yarn shop owner usually do it for me I'm pretty sure that you look at the pattern. You multiply the # of skeins of yarn vs. the # of yard for that particular skein of yarn. Then if you're using a different type of yarn you look at the yards on that skein and divide it into the total yards. That will tell you how many skeins you will need of the other type. Then you should also get an extra skein or two to be safe.

Sometimes your gage is a little different when you use a different yarn. That's why I always want extra. I am making my DS a sweater in a yarn other than in the pattern and I ended up having to go back to the store for two more skeins (I think I had the width but not the length.)
