can the Dr determine if you're ovulating?
Is there a test she can do to see if I ovulated last cycle or if I will this cycle? I have an appt on Friday (CD8).
Would a sonogram show anything?

not this late in the game for last cycle. But when you suspect you are about 7 dpo you can go in and get a blood test which can help the dr determine if you have indeed ovulated or not.

yes, an endometrial biopsy will determine that. It is like a pap smear.

the problem is I have no indication of having ovulated at all, so I would have no idea when I'm 7 dpo. Doesn't help that my cycles are completely irregular, so I couldn't even just guess based on "normal" timelines.
UGH
Is there any point in the appt on Friday? Can she do anything?

well at CD8 your likly to NOT have ovulated that early in the game. Why did the Dr want to see you?
You should start charting your temps. They can help you see if you ovulated or not as well.

Re: can the Dr determine if you're ovulating?
My dr. did an endometrial biopsy on a certain point in my cycle, not sure when. Ask your dr. about it. It was able to tell me my hormone levels, and that I didnt ovulate. Good Luck!!!

Re: can the Dr determine if you're ovulating?
Is there certain timing for the progesterone test and/or the biopsy?
I wonder if I'm jumping the gun, but I really just want to know if I'm ovulating, so that if I'm not, we can do something about that.

I know my friends blood tests are sometime after CD 14. I think around CD 20.

I have been charting for 5 months (3 cycles), and there's been no indication of O, thats why I'm concerned.
The Dr didn't want to see me, I made an appt with her because my lack of O and my irregularity.

I would keep the appointment because she can then schedule you for blood tests/other tests later in this cycle.

Re: can the Dr determine if you're ovulating?
There's no "absolute" answer to this question really. Timing of any of the tests mentioned is critical.
I know for me, the doctor did a combination of things to determine if I had, or if I was about to ovulate...a blood test to show progesterone levels and an internal sonogram to get a closer look at my ovaries and follicles. The problem w/the sonogram is that it can often be inconclusive...meaning that some follicles can appear as if they've already released an egg OR as if they are about to. That's why the simultaneous blood test proves helpful.
Lisa, in your case, the doctor may opt to do a series of blood tests over the course of a week or two, to try to determine any flucuation in your progesterone levels.
Endometrial biopsy can be used for this purpose, but I don't think it's a first choice test in most cases. It is a very invasive and slightly painful test and it typically used to test for abnormalities, fibroids, cancer, etc. as opposed to just trying to pinpoint ovulation.
I hope your appt. was helpful and you have a new plan of action w/your OB!
