Need help from fellow knitters on a pattern explanation

I am not sure I understand the explanation on what to do for decreases.

It reads (for shape neck) of a left front of a cardigan:

- cast off 6 stiches, purl to end of row

So far so good

Then it's the problem (Why am I not getting it???):

Decrease 1 stitch at neck edge (we are shaping the neck) on next 3 rows, then on every following alternate row 3 more times.

So... I decrease (purl 2 together or knit 2 together) on row 1, 2 and 3?

Then I decrease on row 5, 7 and 9?

I am supposed to go from 20 stitches to 14 (so I decrease a total of 6 stitches).

TIA

this is how i read it:

AT NECK: that means only on one side.
the side where you "cast off 6sts" is the side where the sleeve will go. you're only decreasing on the other side now.

The cast off is the neck side too. I already took care of the sleeve side a bit lower.

So I start with the cast off on the neck side and continue to purl. Below is what I have to do AFTER the cast off of 6 stitches on the "wrong side".

"Decrease 1 stitch at neck edge on next 3 rows, then on every following alternate row 3 more times."

then i would think the decrease would be on the purl row? Chat Icon

OK. This is how I interpret it.

Row 1:
Knit two last to stitches of neck edge- knit them together; next side of neck edge knit the first two stitches together and then knit to the end.

Row 2:
Purl two last to stitches of neck edge, purl them together; next side of neck edge purl the first two stitches together and then purl to end

Row 3:
Repeat Row 1

Row 4, 6, 8:
Purl (no deceases)

Row 5, 7, 9:
Repeat Row 1

Edited: because apparently I cannot spell the word "two" Chat Icon

Re: Need help from fellow knitters on a pattern explanation

You are also going to join another skein of yarn on the neck edge that was detached from it when you cast off. That way you can work them both together. (Maybe you already did this. I wasn't sure if that was part of the questions since we're typing over the internet and I cannot see your work. Chat Icon )

OK. That make sense. I think that's how I understood it.

I don't need another warn. I did the cast off on the purl side on the neck side already as a began the row. I continued the purl row.

So now... I should knit the next row (lest call it row 1) and Knit 2 together at the end of the row, right? Then purl 2 together on row 2 (at the beginning of the row on the neck side) and knit 2 together on row 3 at the end at of the row (at the neck edge).

Then purl row 4, 6, 8 (no decrease)
and
Knit 5, 7, 9 and decrease.

I can't remember what you're sweater looks like. Is it a cardigan? For a pull-over you would be working decreases on both sides at the same time. What you're saying is correct for a cardigan.

Yes, it's a cardigan. The left side.

I can't believe I can't come Saturday. It was the "perfect" timing.
