It's Official I have no job...
as of April 30th...
My discontinuance was approved, so I'm being let go...I filed for an appeal with the UFT but i'm still losing my job...I can however look for another and be hired somewhere else, but its not like they are goign to help me.
As much as I hated my school and all, it really blows because, No job = No money and I have to move within the next month.
My life is in shambles and well it stinks.
Sigh...

Re: It's Official I have no job...
You'll either read what I'm about to say and or it may make you think...
I've learned, especially through this profession, that things that start out sucky like this always work out for the best. I know that right now, this really stinks and it makes no sense to you, but--I've learned to trust in the fact that, every time something like this has happened to me, it's lead me to a new and BETTER phase in my life.
I was teaching at a Catholic school in Valley Stream. I wasn't VERY happy there, but hey...it was a job and hopefully a foot in the door to the public schools. I found out at the end of my 2nd year that I was being excessed. I was devastated, for the same reason you are: not so much the fact that I loved it there, but that I needed the money so badly.
SO, I started the job search. Knowing that I probably wouldn't have a job that next year, I signed on with Sylvan part-time (loved that job) and DH and I booked the cruise to Alaska that we had been dying to take. I needed to get my mind off of things, and do something worthwhile. So, we booked the cruise (in April) to leave on August 19th.
Well, about two weeks before we were to leave, I got two amazing phone calls: One from Bethpage, and one from an amazing private school in Merrick (right around the BLOCK from me!!!). I went for a writing sample in Bethpage, fully knowing I'd never be called back. I also went on the private school interview, which went extremely well.
About a week and a half went by, and I didn't hear from either of them--until 5 days before we were leaving for Alaska. The private school wanted me back for my last "official" interview (basically meaning they wanted to give me the job), and, lo and behold, Bethpage called me back and said they were VERY impressed with my writing sample. I was SO EXCITED!!!!
So, I told them both, "I'm going to be away for 10 days, but I would love to come in either the beginning of this week, or as soon as I come back". And both of them said........
...sorry, but the interview needs to be on August 25th (I believe the other one was August 26th)--BOTH of those days, I'd still be away.
In short, I was passed over for both jobs. I was BEYOND depressed, because the trip that I had so looked forward to had cost me two new jobs for that year.
BUT....
In the end, I wasn't tied down to a new school, clinging to a position that I knew 100s of teachers were lined up to take my place for if I screwed up, and not having a job that year gave me the freedom to do what was calling me...and that was to move here to NC.
We've been here 10 months, I have an AMAZING job teaching 5th grade, we have a gorgeous house, and I've made all sorts of amazing new friends. A really sucky situation opened new doors for me, and, even though I couldn't understand it or see any logic in it at the time, it lead me down a path that made me much happier in the long run.
I'm sorry to be so long-winded, but I thought you might like to hear a similar story that ended well. Sure, you're probably not going to be moving off LI, and that's fine, too. But I'd be willing to bet my yearly paycheck (though it's not very much...that in at least a few months from now, you will find yourself in a much better situation than the one you are currently in. Life just has a funny way of working out like that.
In any event--if you're still reading, props to you! But I hope I was able to help you feel better about a bad situation. Best of luck in your search for your new job!

Re: It's Official I have no job...
How can they let you go mid-semester? Don't you have to finish the school year? I don't mean to hurt your feelings, but it sounds like they wanted you out--(they were building a file on you) from the get go. You really don't need to work for a place like that, but I do thin you have rights. I think you have to get paid until at least june and if you started in September, you have to get paid for at least part of the summer. Also, don't forget about unemployment benefits, they are letting you go after all--you will be entitled. You MUST speak to a UFT rep and if the one at your school isn't helping you, then you should go above his/her head to a chapter leader. Go to the UFT website and find the numbers and e-mail addresses o the UFT reps. in your district or e-mail the PIP division (peer intervention program), it is for struggling teachers and I think it is for tenured teachers, but they will definitely point you in the right direction.
I have seen teachers get picked on until they were let go and the most important thing to do is to fight back!! Get what ever you can from them AND you should lodge a complaint against the school for some of the stuff you have written about it on here.
IMO, your best next step would be to apply to a private (Catholic/Yeshiva) because I think if you are being terminated, it is from the Department of Ed. and not from your particular school.
I know it really suucks, but all hope for $$ is not lost yet--plus you hated it there and they treated you so badly--you deserve better!
Good Luck!

I am so sorry I dont know the situation you were in, but what reasons did they give?
Did they give you any warnings or offer any mentoring or support??
Did you have unsatisfactory observations and if so, did they help you to make them better??

Re: It's Official I have no job...
I'm so sorry you're going through this.
I know, because I've seen it happen, that in the City when they want to get rid of you for any reason (even if it's budgetary, or because the principal's nephew needs a job, or something totally unrelated to you) they start "building a file" on you. They actually have people notice what time you walk in and out of the building, pass by your room and make notes if kids are sleeping in the back, stuff like that. Totally crazy and undeserved. And then when you try to appeal the firing, they're like, "oh yeah? Well look how bad you are" and whip out this file. Also, in the school I taught at, there were rumors of a firing quota - the school was "failing" and there was pressure on the principal to get rid of the problem - of course TEACHERS were the problem, why else would a school be failing, right? - so it seemed like he was getting rid of really, really great teachers who disagreed with him over small things. Just because he needed to pick someone, and it was easier to choose the ones he didn't get along with.
Anyway... this is just to say that these things happen sometimes, and if this is the school environment you work in, it's really for the best that you're leaving. I quit my NYC teaching job last year before I found a new one - I just couldn't bear to go back to that building anymore, even after 6 years. I found a new job at the end of June in LI and am sooooo happy here. Hope something similar happens for you. Good luck!!!!

I basically got an unsatisfactory rating for classroom management.
Everytime something occurred related to classroom management i have a meeting where they built a file on me....they would always come creeping around to check on me.
I was getting mentored but only since january, then they pulled me out of mentoring in march because they didnt want to pay me to be mentored anymore.
I was only observed once in december and I recieved a satisfactory rating for that lesson
