Hispanic families...
How do I get this guy to switch to brown rice?
I am stuck making white for him daily and brown for me. Of course, now my baby always wants white instead of brown.
I only made brown for 3 months and DH nearly had a breakdown. He eats brown bread, pasta...but won't give up rice.
Do I really have to give up? He says he can't switch now if white is all he has ever known
tia!

Re: Hispanic families...
White rice is all I've ever known too, being Italian I was brought up on carbs! I have tried brown rice and honestly if I never eat it again I'll be happy. Has he tried brown rice? If he's tried it and still really doesn't like it, then I wouldn't force it. Leo is a runner and in good shape, I don't think white rice wil kill him
and as far a Josh goes...maybe mix in some white with his brown, that way he is still eating the better rice, while thinking he is getting yummy white? idk..I'm not much help, I was and still am a picky eater

Re: Hispanic families...
Do you eat rice every day? I know its a pain in the tush to make both, but like pp suggested you could mix brown and white for the baby.
Or tell your DH to s*ck it up and be a good example for the kid.
Have you considered alternate grains? Like Quinoa or buckwheat? That way it will be something new for your DH and wont seem so different.

Re: Hispanic families...
rice everyday..sometimes twice a day.
I am so riced out. He use to eat it breakfast, lunch and dinner.
He said he can go brown every now and then, but can't live on it.
I just hate that this staple item is garbage. Zero fiber.
I hate giving it to the baby. but all he ever sees is Leo eating white.
Leo's dad is diabetic, so are his uncles. I can't help but to think this white rice contributed.
thanks!

I have made quinoa before, he use to work in a vegan restaurant, so he is open minded...but seriously, he eats 4 cups a day of white.

Re: Hispanic families...
4 cups of white rice is a lot, but what are you eating it with? Beans? those are high in fiber, so your probably ok there.
White rice, any white grain and sugar do not cause diabetes alone. the problem is being overweight, but since these foods are less filling you tend to eat more calories leading to weight gain.
Maybe make a deal- 4 days a week brown rice and 3 days white. Its not "bad" in and of itself, especially if you are eating other high fiber foods.

Re: Hispanic families...
thanks Jackie..
usually rice and eggs
once a day, rice with beans.
almost always rice with meat.
Unless I throw a vegtable at him, he would never think to put one on his plate.

I was just thinking brown rice would never cut it in arroz con gandules!!
Can you mix the 2 together once they are cooked, so at least he's not only eating white rice?
He eats beans, right? Maybe make less rice and fill him up w/ more beans.

Re: Hispanic families...
Have you tried brown Sushi rice??? I find that the short grain brown rice is closer in flavor and texture to white rice.

Re: Hispanic families...
ya know, I don't think you can easily swap out something like that... your DH grew up on that... that would be like removing my AM coffee and replacing it with tea.... it's simply impossible. I'm german, and pregnant.... and for 9 months I've been told I cannot eat one ham sandwich. I know how some dietary rules can suffocate a person
Since you're mainly worrying about health consequences, how about stop focusing on substitution, and instead focus on paring down the portion size of everyone in the family. Cook half the amount of rice you used to, and add another veggie or a salad. Then no matter what, DH gets what he craves, yet he gets a lot of fiber and nutrients, becuase of the additional side... also your DC will learn about healthy eating and get exposed to more veggies
