would you buy a house that completely had to be redone inside?

We looked at a house tonite and fell in love...but the inside is pretty bad...completely needs to be redone, and smells like mildew.

If this goes through, we are freaking as to where to begin...any suggestions?

If it's at a really good price then it's worth it

I'd only buy it if it were for an amazing price. I actually enjoy challenges and would prefer to start rooms from scratch, but I'd probably only consider it if it were a bargain.

I say go for it if you guys have the funds to remodel!
It will be very costly I am sure!
Good Luck in your decision

We're going through this decision right now. What wev'e been doing is adding the price of the house with the cost of renovating and then looking on MLSLI to see what houses in that range are like. See what I mean? If you dump x amount into a house that costs xy what will a house that costs x + xy look like. This is how we're deciding and it makes sense to me.

It depends. Location was a big thing for me. The more expensive things to redo are kitchens and bathrooms. Can you live in it and work around it? Then it might not be so bad.

with the smell thats in there right now, its not liveable, but the place needs to be severely aired out and cleaned..>It must've been an elderly couple that could not keep up with it, and then i guess they died.
It really needs a lot of work, but i'm sure temporarily we can move in with my parents if needed...and just fix it up little by little.

If you are just starting out, I would say 'yes'. Then you can rebuild over time as funding becomes available.

I would say go for it, if you enjoy doing that type of work or have the funds for it. This way you can make it exactly how you would like it!!!

I agree with the others, if it 's in a fantastic location/SD etc and you have somewhere to stay while renovating and the price is low enough, then go for it! You can make it how you want it.
We would have done this but wouldn't have anywhere to live while doing the work and honestly didn't want a HUGE project. But the end result will be worth it ... Good luck!

This sounds exactly like my house when we bought it! It was a time warp to 1960... and the boarded up most of the windows b.c they didn't like light! It was crazy. It also smelled like old lady. We did get a great deal and we re did the whole place ourselves. It came out amazing.

Re: would you buy a house that completely had to be redone inside?

that's what we're going through right now. our house was terrible when we bought it. we closed a month ago and have been doing a MILLION and one things since. i feel terrible bc i had back surgery 4 months ago, and am not too much help. little by little it's getting done. if it's in a place you want to live, and you can see past the mess, etc, than i say go for it! it's amazing what a can of paint and new floors can do for a house!!! we couldn't live there until the walls were painted, and the carpets were torn up and floors redone (they were gross!!!). i don't think the people ever cleaned- it was very sad. now, we have new appliances, the rooms are all painted, we've taken trees down, done all of the floors, and we just keep going little by little. one month later and it's a new house!!!! we moved in last week, and it really feels like home already!!! good luck!!!!!

Yes, if the price was right and the location was right. We are looking for something that needs cosmetic work and we are going to redo it a little at time with the help of our families.

would this house be in commack, by any chance? we saw one just like that. the whole inside needed to be gutted and redone. we passed on it b/c we would not have the extra funs to renovate after we moved in.

We are buying one in Commack like that...in fact, we saw quite a few in that area!!!

Re: would you buy a house that completely had to be redone inside?

Thats what we did!
Every house in our range needed a lot of work, but even if it didn't we would want to make the home "our own" anyway.
I am very happy with the way things are turning out, and everything is new (down to the sheetrock/insulation) and our style. We knocked down a wall to make a bigger open kitchen , and added a wall somewhere else. Luckily for us our house has a studio apartment that we lived in while renovating the rest of the house. If we add the amount of money we spent on fixing up the house to the price we bought it for, that price does not compare to a totally renovated house in the neighborhood. There is one for sale 5 houses down asking $70K more than we bought at... AND the house isn't even completely updated... so I say if you are up to the work it is definitely worth it.

We are in the same boat. We are in the process of buying a house and gutting the whole thing. My DH is a in construction so he can fix all of the problems this house has and make it brand new. We are going to be putting another 20k or more into it but then the whole place is new and the way we want it to be.

Re: would you buy a house that completely had to be redone inside?

I would def, but it would have to be at a great I mean really low- great price and if I was going to do so much work to it, it would have to be the house I can see myself living in for the rest of my life.

I would do it if the price was right, the location was good and I had an extremely handy husband.

Re: would you buy a house that completely had to be redone inside?

As long as you are ready to commit to many months (years even) of living in an unfinished house, and you have some livable space while the repairs are getting done I think it is a great way to get a quick ROI, not to mention a great way to get into a home.
