ideas for a puppy
I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for a puppy I would like to buy for my mom. I have no idea of the various breeds but maybe you can suggest something based on the info.. It must remain small, light colored, not alot of shedding, defintiely calm, not noisy...just a companion type of dog. I love those shitzu pups but they seem to yap alot. Oh also I want to stay under 800 if possible. Thanks for the info.

thats ALOT of restrictions!!! lol Are you SURE she wants a dog??? also, giving a dog as a gift isnt a good idea unless she KNOWS about it. no rescue/shelter will adopt out a pup thats going to be a gift. and some breeders wont either. and dont get from a pet shop... those places are evil.
you obviously want a toy breed. how small do you want it to stay? under 10lbs? under 20 lbs?
i dont think youll hvae a problem finding a light colored one at all.
and under $800 shouldnt be a problem either. you can get a decent pet quality pup for about $600 on average.
as far as the "yappy"ness of a dog i think it varies fom individual dog not just oveall breed. for example, chihuahuas are known to be yappy but mine isnt the least bit.
you can get a dog with "hair" rather than "fur". they dont shed. some examples are toy poodles, maltese, bichone frise, chinese crested (hairless or powderpuff).
i would suggest to you perhaps a PAPILLION
They are truly beautiful dogs. They are quite tiny weighing 3-9lbs fully grown. I dont believe they shed alot either. Their life span is about 13-16 years. Excellent companion pet.
Another dog I would suggest is a CHINESE CRESTED POWDERPUFF (i have a hairless one)
Their life span is about 10-14 years They are tiny as well. (Mine weighs 10 lbs) They are great for people with allergies. They shed---but VERY little. They come in virtually any color, and pattern. They incredibly lovable dogs. I plan on getting a Powderpuff one day myself.
Dogs are my forte so if you have any questions just FM me!

Re: ideas for a puppy
Please do your research before getting a puppy. They require a lot of attention and training. Remember, they require vet care, neutering/spaying and commitment. THey are not toys.
Don't buy a pup for a gift. Talk to your mom first.
Please don't buy from a pet store. Look into a shelter or breeder and bring mom with you.
Pets should never be given as gifts!!!!
If puppies are too much work, adopt an adult dog.

Re: ideas for a puppy
Let me explain, I am not trying to just buy something and then give it back. I want a puppy that will be a companion in my moms house for her and my handicapped sister. We've only had a cat in the past. I am asking for suggestions. In no way will the puppy go back. I know she will love a puppy its just about finding the right one. I dont feel I am being restrictive at all. I am merely looking for ideas. If your ideas are good I will use them in my search. I may or may not use these ideas. I just was looking for ways to begin my search. Also my mom will know. Its not like a surprise. I just figured if anyone had any experience with dogs they could steer me in the right direction.

Re: ideas for a puppy
well thats good that your mom knows.
do you know if she has a fondess for any particular breeds? and how big or small do you think she'd like??
i am trying to help you out, and i can help you find a good breeder/rescue..... but i need alittle more to go off of.
actually, you can (or have your mom) take a test online that helps you get a better idea of what breed will suit your lifestyle.

Re: ideas for a puppy
what kind of test? that sounds like it could be helpful. They had a small dog when I was very little named pinky. Because they knew nothing about dogs...my dad had picked it bc it was so small with HUGE paws. Well, in about 2 months "Pinky" was a thumb digging up the concrete on our new house (in 1970s) and running around with a bench from my moms room. It was a nightmare. A friend of theirs took the dog. I just dont want another situation of not knowing what we are getting into.

Re: ideas for a puppy
Sorry, 1 more thing. My DH is dying for a pug. do u have info or opinions on this kind of dog? It seemed like a lap dog and very calm. I just want to make sure there is not more that I need to be aware of when checking out pugs.

I have a pug. He is a wonderful dog. Very mushy and friendly and requires a lot of attention. Pugs have a lot of energy and can be hyper at times though.
I found this online..this decribes my pug... Temperament This is an even-tempered breed, exhibiting stability, playfulness, great charm, dignity, and an outgoing, loving disposition.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Depending on the extend of the handicap, your mom and sister may qualify for a dog trained to aid in the live of someone with disabilities. You also may want to think long and hard about a puppy. They require a lot of work and depending on the amount of care your sister may require, if any, a puppy may not be the best fit. Poodles are very good dogs that don't shed and people aren't allergic to.

Re: ideas for a puppy
I just wanted to tell you that I have a Lhasa Apso, and although I love him he is nasty. Bites when provoked or if you take anything away from him. The vet told me that this is common, so that is one dog I would definately rule out. I love mine, but I will never get another one.
