Anyone a member of NEFCU?

and specifically has anyone done a mortgage with them? any insights on that? Rate?

hi! I am a member and so is FH.

FH and I went there to try to get our preapproval for a mortgage there and it was such a pain in the buttt that we decided to go to astoria federal (where FH also has an account). It was one of the only places that we were able to sit down with someone to do this.

NEFCU doesnt do the preapproval at their branches. We were told by the branch that we would have to call the main offices in Westbury to set up an appt and sit down with them. But they did give us a packet. This is FH's a my first time buying a home and we didnt feel comfortable just filling out the paper work without someone there to answer questions

So I called the Westbury office and they sort of gave me a hard time telling me that they really dont sit down with anyone and that I can just fill out the papers online. then someone would contact us. This annoyed me. Again this is our first time doing this and I want someone there to explain everything to me, not to just blindly fill out paperwork.

We ended up at Astoria Federal the rates were about the same and they were so accomodating. They had this really nice guy come in to meet us in the valley stream AF from his office in I think Lake Success. He sat down with us filled everything out with us!

thanks for the info.! i am surprised they were so NOT helpful.... we want to hopefully close by July 1 so we need to do this soon! i will call and see what happens, but thanks for the heads up!

do you have to have a bank account with Astoria Federal to get a mortgage?

I dont think you have to.. im sure they would be more than happy to give you one even if you dont have an account there

I had a similar experience. I was a member for the eventual mortgage break and they really gave me a tough time on the phone so I said forget it and went to Wells Fargo.

i just calleed them and they were really nice and are scheduling an appointment for me with a mortgage counselor. we'll see how it goes, but right now they have the lowest rate that i've seen and that's most important.

It probably all depends on who you get on the phone, but if NEFCU didn't have such great rates I would have gone with a different company. They have no sense of customer service.
