Changing your license

Has anyone here who holds more than one license ever switched from one to another? I have my Early Childhood (which I am appointed under) and my Common Branch.

Up until now I have always taught either K or 1 so there was never an issue. In September, however, I will be teaching 4th and with the NCLB if I don't change over to my Common Branch license the school will be out of compliance with "100% Highly Qualified".

I told my principal that I would switch but I'm nervous about losing tenure for two years! Has anyone done this???

I called the UFT but they, as usual, were very "overly dramatic" about the whole thing.

TIA

What exactly did the UFT say??? They probably don't know what they are talking about anyway

Re: Changing your license

Why would you loose your two years? Tenure is first school granted and then system granted. If you remain at the same school, then your tenure track should not be questioned.

And Oh, BTW, the UFT Suc Ks! That is all I have to say about them. Waste of my time and dues!

yes, but tenure is granted in the CERTIFICATION AREA. so she could lose the 2 years towards her tenure for the early childhood tenure.

I have two certifications and am only tenured in one.... in my district, you get tenured in your certification area.

i would look into it.... but honestly, i don't think i would switch unless they could guarantee me the tenure...

or i just thought of this... common branch INCLUDES k-6... so wouldn't your years in K and 1 count towards the common branch tenure??? you mgiht now get it in early childhood, but at least you would have it after next year in 4th?

Re: Changing your license

Basically the UFT said that when you change from one to the other you go back on probation but instead of three years like when you are first appointed it is only two years. Bottom like is that I COULD get excessed if I switch but my principal all but put it in writing that she wouldn't let that happen.

Once the two years are up you get full tenure back again. I would keep my building seniority through those two years so if there was an excessing situation I wouldn't be the first to go... but she also hasn't excessed anyone in the 7 years that I've been there!!!

My biggest fear is that I will HATE 4th and want to go back to Early Childhood!!! (I know I can teach lower grades with the common branch license but I liked the security of knowing that someone else couldn't bump me out of the lower grades!!!)

I never wanted to teach the upper grades but after having my daughter I feel like I need to spend the day with kids who are independent and not so needy. KWIM? I want to be able to come home from work and give her my all... not be stressed that I had 27 kids clinging to me all day long!!! Chat Icon

Re: Changing your license

This happened to my dh. He is licensed for phys. ed Pre k - 12 grade. He taught 5 years in a high school and when he switched to a middle school he had to change his status and then lost his tenure and went probabtion for 2 years. I think it is silly, but it happens. I would double check, this might be the same thing in your case. Good luck.

Re: Changing your license

However, next year the UFT is introducing Fast Track Tenure. This will be for those in different areas or people who are entering the field from another industry (ie...lawyer teaching history) Ask about that!
