Italy and clothing
My husband's parents were nice enough to get us a cruise as a wedding gift. We are going to be in France 1 day, Sicily 1 day, and several days in Italy. The cruise is in July.
What type of dress is standard in those countries? I have no idea what to wear.
I have never been out this country or on a cruise, so everything will be brand new!

Re: Italy and clothing
shorts, tee shirts, tank tops, skirts, sundresses are all okay - but you might want to bring some longer skirts/dresses or capris (that cover your knees) and shirts that cover your shoulders. Sundresses are great too. If you plan to go into any churches to sightsee you will need to cover your knees and shoulders. I studied in Florence back in college and on a weekend trip some friends learned the hard way in Venice when they wore tank tops and skirts (that came above the knee) and were not allowed into some of the churches and had to wait outside for the rest of our group. Some churches have scarves you can borrow but in busy times they run out and I wouldn't rely on that. The other thing you can do is wrap a sweater over your shoulders when you go inside.
If you do a cruise tour you could very well end up at a church - the museums are not an issue - but some of them can be very warm like the uffizi. July in Italy can be well into the 90's - the summer I was there it was upper 80's and 90's most days with the first two days at 100.
Which cruiseline are you going on? I took one about 11 years ago around Greece and Turkey and it was fabulous. My parents go on one every summer.

Re: Italy and clothing
Capris and tshirts/tanks are good for the cities. Make sure you have comfy shoes. I made the mistake of wearing flip flops one day and my feet paid for it. Mostly I wore my Sketchers. For out in the country definitely stick with skirts or sundresses as it gets way hot in July!

Capri's, skirts, sun dresses. Anything that will keep you cool. It is very hot there this time of year.
We went on a cruise for our honeymoon as well to Italy, Spain, Greece and France. When we were in Italy it was 90+ degrees. I wore a knee length skirts that were cotton and a tank top but brought along a sweater when we went to see the Vatican.

Re: Italy and clothing
skirts and sundresses. I agree with the PP about the churches. Bring a scarf and keep it in your bag if you wear sleeveless. Don't wear shorts - it is a big sign that you are a tourist. Don't bring jeans b/c they are way too hot! Sicily is so beautiful, but extremely hot! Bring a wide brimmed hat! Enjoy
