NYC teachers and changing license

Have any of you changed your license from common branches to a specific area? How hard is it to get it done? Do you have to get tenure all over again? What about longevity?

I don't know the answer for this question but I would love to see the responses.

I am in the same situation. I am certified 1-6 but I am currently teaching in a middle school. I would like to get an extension for science but I do not know what it entails.

Let me know if you find out.Chat Icon

I did the reverse and had to start over on the tenure track. However, i9f you are already tenured in an area, i believe you only need to do 2 years, not three.

Yes, you need to get re-tenured in your specific area again. However, you can apply for Jaremia(sp?) credit. Depending on the number of years you have with the DOE as a tenured teacher, your tenure "term" will be reduced.

For example, my friend is switching over to her Special Ed license. She's a tenured teacher under her common branch for 7 years. She applied, and her new tenure term will be a year and a half. Of course, admin has to sign off and agree to this.

You keep your building seniority, longevity, salary, etc. Let's just say you ever want to switch back to your common branch, you do not have to redo your original tenure.
