Career Change to Teaching Help!

Ok, here I am again!!!

I have to start really thinking about Graduate school. Only 9 credits left until Undergrad graduation. The military is paying for it so I have to provide them with a detailed plan ASAP! So I need to start getting my ducks in a row!

Can you all help? I was looking into a Master of Arts in Teaching program. It doesn't start until January 2010, leaving me with a year period of doing nothing! AND!! I hear this program is no joke!

I feel like I am pinned in a corner though having an Undergrad in Professional Aeronautics!

What Grad degrees can I look into that I can get accepted to with an Undergrad in something other than education????

Re: Career Change to Teaching Help!

i'm not sure... but my sister has an undergrad degree in landscape design/plant science... and then she went back and now shes a middle school science teacher and loves it. so even though her undergrad was unrelated to teaching, she went into an area of teaching that was related to her undergrad.
maybe science might be a good area of teaching for you to go into, too- being that your undergrad is science related. maybe even high school physics or something?? its also an area of teachign that is a little more in demand than a "regular" elementary teacher.
i'm a speech therapist that works in schools, so i don't know if that helps you at all either... good luck!!

Re: Career Change to Teaching Help!

my undergrad degree was different, but related - it was a BFA in musical theater, then I went back to grad school for an MA in music ed. I was so grateful that they let me into their program- there were other schools that wouldn't accept me because I didn't have enough music theory credits for their program.

Why do you have to wait until 2010? Is this through the military? I wish I could just tell you to go to Hunter College like I did Chat Icon but I know you're not in NY. Wish I was more help!

There are lots of people with a career change that needed to get their grad degree in order to teach....there must be something. Are there any advisors you can speak to?

I don't have to wait until 2010. Just University of South Carolina doesn't start their program again until 2010. Trying to avoid that wait if at all possible!

Thanks for all of your help!!! Anyone else?????

Re: Career Change to Teaching Help!

you DO NOT need an undergraduate degree in education!!!!! i don't know what your undergrad. major was, but it doesn't matter.

you shoudl get a MAT or even better a Master of Science in Education and through the degree, you will pick a certification area.... elementary, special ed., secondary subject, etc.

my husband has a political science degree and a law degree, so clearly he will get certified in social studies, since he has the coursework done already. he is also getting a special education certification.

if you have a degree in a science, math or something else that could be transferred to teaching, that's great. you can easily get certified in that area with an undergrad. degree, then all you have to worry about is the teacher-education courses and not the content courseowrk, if that makese sense.

GOOD LUCK!

ETA: i put that you don't need an education undergrad. degree to teach only because that doesn't matter if you are going back to school for a Masters in Education.

However, in the Carolinas (i think you're there) and many other states, most teachers have an undergrad. in education because a masters degree is NOT required there to teach so they MUST have the Bachelors in Education.

National University has an online master's in education program. You don't have to have a bachelor's in an education-related field, and I believe it's accredited. And you definitely won't have to wait until 2010!

I have a B.S in Speech Pathology and I'm getting my Masters in Education now...just finished my first year.

lots of schools will accept you will a degree in something other. You might just have to take some pre-reqs. Inquire at the schools.

i am sure there are exceptions depending upon the certification area, but people that are teaching acadmics in a classroom, i.e. elementary education, you would need the BA in education.
