Re: Teaching Social Studies
In my building we had a teacher come in one day dressed in a toga, teaching the students about ancient Greece. She was out in the hallway "acting" the part. It was great and the kids were so excited to come in.

Re: Teaching Social Studies
Try to relate it to something going on. I also try to talk about what it was like for children in whatever era we are talking about.

Re: Teaching Social Studies
relate it to what's going on in the world today... as they say, "history repeats itself." the teacher i work with who teaches social studies (I modify for special needs kids) compared the Civil war to what went on in Kenya. We tracked the primary races with a huge map... kids learned geography such as state size and population and tied in nicely with our unit on government.
for the constitution we the kids created a classroom bill of rights, etc. etc.
