What do you look for when choosing a school to teach in?

A question I would definitely ask on an interview would be about teacher turnover rates. If the school is losing a lot of teachers each year there must be a reason.

Location- is it close to your friends and family...
Salary- is it at least comparable to the surround areas...
Contract- is it descent- the number of sick days, the salary, etc...
The final thing... when you walk in the school do you like it. Look at the staff and students and the halls and see if people seem nice and happy and respectful.

I totally agree.
And I would add, a supportive administration. This is so important.

Number 1, particularly on Long Island, is it a tenure track position or just a leave replacement position where you could be out of a job again in a year or less.
Number 2: salary and benefits: is it comparable to other schools/districts in the area?
Number 3: Commute
Other things that are important like school climate, administration, people you work with etc. are so important, but next to impossible to judge just by interviewing or looking at the school. you need to be there to get a true sense of that.
