Finger Lakes
Are the Finger Lakes worth the drive from Long Island?
Trying to find someplace to drive in the middle of October for a few days for our first anniversary.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

the finger lakes are far!!!! i had to go up there a few weeks ago for work and i flew - an hour flight plus a one hour drive. its cute there, but i'd look at when grape festival/season is and go then. I don't think its in october.

We went to Ithaca last summer and it took us about 4 hours from Suffolk. It's not a bad drive, and it is absolutely gorgeous. Definitely worth the trip. We went to Watkins Glen, the Lab of Ornithology, and went swimming in the waterfalls. There is so much to see and do. Any questions, just ask--I also went to school there. For a romantic weekend stay at LaTourelle Resort and Spa

Re: Finger Lakes
I think that the drive to the finger lakes is all relative. I have family that lives up there and we used to drive up there all of the time. I am used to it. It is a nice drive and it is nice up there especially this time of the year. It is about 5 or 6 hrs from LI.

Re: Finger Lakes
It is a beautiful region of NY, and I think definitely worth the drive up. I'd recommend Canandaigua at the top of Canandaigua Lake. The NY Wine and Grape Center is there plus tons of vineyards up and down both shores of the lake.

Re: Finger Lakes
I went to school in the finger lakes and am originally from Rochester.
What I'd recommend for a shorter drive is to go up Rte 17 to Rte 14 by Elmira and go up via Seneca Lake - you have beautiful views, LOTS AND LOTS of wineries that you can do tours and taste testings with a beautiful view, there is Watkin's Glen on the south end of the lake and Geneva at the north end. Geneva has beautiful B&Bs and hotels in the area - very resort town with a college nestled within in.
It's about a 4-5 hour drive.
