Would you be upset?
So, I currently work for a very large international company in finance. My role is basically in charge of all finance for one of their business units. Currently I report to the President of the division. My title in General Manager. In our world the next step is director, sr. director, vp, president. My boss has been trying to upgrade my title to director since basically i'm responsible for everything and my role is comparable to other directors in the organization. I don't have an update on what the status is on that.
Anyway, word is out that they want all finance people to report into the CFO group of the parent company rather than the individual business unit president. I'm basically the only one effected. Reporting to a CFO is good in terms of exposure and stuff. However, i'm hearing that if this happens I will report to a director.
To me that is sort of like a downgrade for me. Going from reporting to a President who has lots of clout in the organization, to a director who is a terrible manager and has a terrible reputation with the company. Needless to say I am very upset about the whole thing. For various reasons. Would this upset you?

Re: Would you be upset?
At this point, I would be upset that no one was telling me what is happening to me & my job. Is there someone you can sit down with to go over the changes?
I don't care so much about titles or anything - mostly my job description and of course my paycheck. But I also work for a private company where titles don't mean really anything.

Re: Would you be upset?
Definitely.
I went from working for the EVP to a VP and it not only changes the perception of you by others in the company, it also limits your career path - they won't have a director working for a director, so you will have to move to wait for your "new boss" to leave.
I would talk with your current boss to get the real story and remind him/her that you are supposed to be regraded.

Re: Would you be upset?
the whole thing is REALLY frustrating for me.
I talk to my boss constantly about it and he's pushing for the regrade but not getting answers. And I think part of the holdup is that this woman who I would be reporting to would probably have a fit if we were the same title. Even though she is an awful manager, she has at least 15 years more experience than I do so I couldn't blame her for being upset although it shouldn't be my problem. However, since she has such a bad rap with "corporate" they refuse to give her a senior director title. And so of course that is rolling downhill now.
It all just makes no sense to me at all. We work together really well in my group and not convinced that centralizing is adding any value. Actually, I think it is taking away some value.
Part of my hesitation also has to do with the fact that i LOVE my current boss. He's awesome. And has been so good to me since the beginning. He's given me promotions without asking. Raises at random. Is totally flexible, etc. The other group NEVER has anyone promoted. Doesn't value people. Doesn't value work/life balance. I'm basically terrified. And would hate to have to start over somewhere else. But might have to.
