Re: never made pasta before-
the linguine will be the easy part if you're also making baked clams! Just boil a large pot of water and add the pasta to the boiling water and cook according to the directions on the box. You can cut up your own garlic and saute it but it'll be much easier to use the already chopped garlic. When the liguine is done and drained coat it with olive oil, not too much but not too little or your pasta will stick together, maybe 3-4 tablespoons? If you're doing a whole box of linguine I'd throw in about 2 tsps of chopped garlic to start off with, taste it, you might want it more garlicky. Add in some salt and pepper to taste and that's your basic pasta with garlic. You can add more or less ingredients depending on your taste. I always like to throw in a box of chopped broccoli and some chicken.

Re: never made pasta before-
Slice about 6 cloves of garlic Put a couple tbs of olive oil in a pan Add the garlic and sautee on LOW until garlic becomes soft (do not burn garlic, cook on LOW flame!) - it will take 5-10 minutes to soften While cooking add a few pinches of kosher salt, a few grinds of fresh black pepper and a few shakes of crushed red pepper (if you like a little heat) - it will flavor the oil.
Top with some chopped fresh parsley or a few shakes of dried parsley.
