Random Poll - Just curious - "REad the book, THEN see the MOvie" or VICE VERSA ?
What's YOUR Theory and why ?
Im sure this answer can vary greatly depending on the subject matter and the class.
But my Professor was specifically talking aobut Social studies and things that students may not be able to relate to (special ed population)
and he STRONGLY felt that seeing the movie was a huge plus...
your thoughts ?
Is your gut response to say book first ? (which is what Ive heard almost alwayS)...

Book then movie for most people... the book is always better. there is nothing like a good book and we can all relate to a favorite book being turned into a movie and the characters are just not the same or how we invisioned. they usually leave key things out too...
however, i teach special education and sometimes, depending on the kids, the movie first is better. after they have the visual of the movie, then i can dive into the book and they understand it so much better and then i get go into more depth with things like vocabulary, author's craft, etc. a great example of this was The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. My special ed. kids got it so much better after the movie.. the book would have been way over their heads otherwise.

I feel like the movie strongly influences my perception of the book before I read it. Maybe certain plot twists in the movie don't appear in the book. I always loved reading, so that plays a huge part in it too.

I don't really read books per se in my class because I don't have time to cover everything I need to as it is, but I would cover a topic and then show a movie about it reinforcing what they just learned, constantly asking questions and helping them make connections
My husband is an English teacher, teaching Ramp UP and ESL....from what I see, it all depends on the book...some books he teaches first, and then shows the movie...what he has been doing with a few books is showing it simultaneously...read a few chapters and then show that part to the kids...most of these movies though are very similar to the book...that is something you have to be careful about...often the producers/directors change parts of the movie to make it more appealing.

I teach ESL and I tend to do book, then movie. However, if there is a related movie I might expose them to that first for context (for example, when reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, I might show the movie for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer first to expose them to characters, setting, genre).
I've never shown the whole movie before the book, perhaps I would show a snippet of it to get them interested, but I want them to really understand the written word, and then make connections with the visual. JMO

Re: Random Poll - Just curious - "REad the book, THEN see the MOvie" or VICE VERSA ?
Well, as an English teacher, I always have them read the book before showing the movie. I love doing this because it makes them appreciate the book even more.
I'll never forget my second year teaching. I had my 10th graders read To Kill a Mockingbird, one of my all-time favorites, and then see the movie (another one of my favorites). But I guess I'd never read it/seen it so close together like that, so I hadn't realized the changes the director had made. The kids were MAD. They kept saying that when they grew up, they were making their OWN versions of the movie and not leaving ANYTHING out. I loved it. Look at me, creating a class of "book purists."

Book then movie...books are so much better...they give a lot more detail.
its nice to see the comparison though..and often times you can pick out where the movie skimped out on little things or sometimes changed things...often times to disapointment.
